FILM
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences puts on a special screening of some recent documentaries at the Linwood Dun Theatre tonight, and it is free. Show begins at 7 PM and will feature the following works: Salim Baba by Tim Sternberg, Weijun Chen's Please Vote for Me and My Kid Could Paint That by Amir Bar-Lev. The films cover unique topics ranging from the life of a man dedicated to helping entertain kids via film to a theoretical free election in China and the works of a four year old art genius.

TALK
It seems like nearly every time one turns on the news these days, there is one or more stories about border town drug trafficking violence making its rounds on the airwaves. Tonight, the Mark Taper Auditorium at the Los Angeles Central Public Library hosts Blogging the Narco-Wars, an in-depth discussion examining the topic from the perspective of a journalist. KPCC's Adolfo Guzman-Lopez moderates the panel discussion aiming at providing some insight at the work and dangers involved in covering such matters. Panelists include Binational Human Rights Center in Tijuana founder Victor Clark Alfaro, Tijuana TV reporter Vicente Calderon and KPBS San Diego reporter Amy Isackson. Starts at 7 PM.

SCIENCE
If you are one of those folks that is intrigued by the night sky, you might enjoy learning a bit more about the heaven's above, even if you aren't ready to don a set of Spock ears to go catch the latest Star Trek film. The UCLA Division of Astronomy and Astrophysics takes over the planetarium on Wednesday nights to present a sky show and discuss various astronomical topics. Presentation starts at 7 and is free, but be aware that late comers will not be seated. Stick around after the planetarium show on clear nights and you'll also be able to check out planets and other heavenly bodies first hand through one of the telescopes.

VIGIL
Reporter Lisa Ling will speak at the Wokcano in Santa Monica in support of her sister Laura Ling and Euna Lee. Laura and Lee, both journalists, are currently being held by North Korean officials with no signs of an impending release. Lisa's speech will be part of a candlelight vigil on the eve before Laura and Lee's trial is set to start after nearly 3 months of encarceration. The event will be hosted by Kelly Hu and begins at 7 PM.

Weijun Chen's PLEASE VOTE FOR ME has been banned in China because it deals with the subject of democracy. I can't think of a better film to see on the 20th anniversary of Tiananmen Square. It's a beautiful movie -- run to this one.
