“Martin Landsky is a true jack of all trades,” said Droog’s Andrei Osyka, of the globetrotting DJ/producer/remixer from Berlin. “His music’s equally inspired by deep house and techno, as well as wedded to the timeless and of-the-moment.”
For the last few years, Droog has been doing their damndest to deepen LA’s mark on the global techno map -- even if it means staying up all night. This Sunday, Droog (Justin Sloe, Andrei, and Brett Griffin) and friends will be manning the day-shift, as they take over the Standard Hotel’s gorgeous rooftop for their monthly summer session.
Bringing Landsky back to LA, Droog’s continuing what they do best: mixing world techno’s avant garde with Hollywood’s sexier side (read: no sausage fests.) LAist recently had a brief chat with Landsky, in a rare moment where he wasn’t on a plane, in the studio, or playing a club.
LAist: Can you describe the music you play?
Martin Landsky: Sexy-as hell-funky, groovy, intelligent, minimal techy-house with a blend of serious, mind-blowing deepness in a mesmerizing outfit of highest quality...
Kidding aside, it´s hard to describe my own music. Some people tend to call it minimal tech house with an old school attitude. I call it electronic dance music. In the end it´s all house music, at least to me.
Where’s the most exciting city to play these days?
There are many places I have had fun and exceptional experiences. But I have to say, I have had some really great times in the States the last few months.
How do you like playing Los Angeles?
I just played LA once, it was a small but intense party, so this is going to be my second time. I did enjoy the last time a lot. I met a lot of great people and they seem to be really into music.
Do you still play vinyl?
I play vinyl and CDs. I love vinyl but unfortunately the circumstances force me to play more and more digital [MP3s to CD]. There are some technical situations -- bad turntable setups -- and most of the record labels have switched to all-digital promotion. There are more or less no vinyl promo send-outs anymore.
What do you predict to be the tune of the summer?
I haven´t found that one summer 2009 hit yet. But if I do find one, it´s probably not the one most people would vote for *laughs*
