Mike Radke bought Maui Rose in Hermosa Beach about a little over a year ago, and serves up the finest Hawaiian fusion and Asian cuisine this side of the 405 freeway. Even though he has delicious food, a great location, and cooking skills, times are tough.
Next time you're in the South Bay, swing by 450 Pacific Coast Hwy in Hermosa Beach and tell him LAist sent you.

Thanks for this post. I will check it out, since I live/work around the area.
I love Maui Rose, however, I try not to eat out too often during the week. My favorite day to order from MR was always on Sunday when I have the day off, but Maui Rose hasn't been open on a Sunday in months. I'm no restaurateur but closing on Sunday seems like an odd choice for an eatery. I even called to order on Memorial Day Monday and it was closed.
I know that in tough times, restaurant owners have to choose their hours carefully, however, they're losing customers like me by closing their doors on Sunday. Not criticizing, just offering advice: you can't make money when you're closed.
Best of luck to Maui Rose. The food is great when you can get it and the employees may be the nicest in the South Bay.

Why am I supposed to feel fucking sorry for this guy? Everyone knows restaurants are one of the most risky investments you could make even in a GOOD economy, and in this BAD economy, there are people so much worse off than this dude. The whole way this video is shot, and with the music, is trying so hard to manipulate your emotions into thinking there is some great tragedy going on here. Sorry the economy is drowning your business, but you're nothing special (or exceptionally sad).
I disagree that you are "supposed to feel sorry" or that there is an intention to manipulate people's feelings.
The intention was to get great photos, and let Mike tell his story however it turned out. I chose the music because in my iTunes collection it was the least distracting from what he was saying.
The reality of owning a restaurant during a recession happens to be Mike Radke's story for right now, which is why that is how it came out. I fail to see how that is manipulative. Please explain.
Although I'm not agreeing with everything GoToHell said, I think his main point, which I do agree with, is that this is not so much "The reality of owning a restaurant during a recession" as "The reality of owning a restaurant, period."
That said, if Mike's product actually is good, the guy sure seems like he's trying and I hope it works out for him. Sadly, it is pretty likely it won't.
You're the kinda guy who farts in elevators, right?
Umm, that was meant for Go To Hell.
@Gotohell - Did you really need to type that out? Negative much? Stay home, drink your 6pack alone and eat your poptarts straight out of the box.
I hope he makes it; it's tough out there
And... there are lots of restaurants, especially in LA. Most of which are probably hurting somewhat during the recession.
