Bicyclist Killed by City Truck in the West Valley

cyclist_killed_ladwp.jpeg A Los Angeles Department of Water & Power truck struck and killed a cyclist this afternoon in the Lake Balboa area. A woman in her 30s was riding her bicycle when the truck, attempting to make a right turn, ran into her shortly after 12 p.m., said Devin Gales, a spokesman with the LA Fire Department. Paramedics responded finding her trapped under the truck, located at 7447 N. Louise Avenue. The driver was a private contractor doing work on behalf of LADWP, a department spokesperson said. Further details are pending an investigation. UPDATE: The LAPD estimates her age to be between 50 and 60 years old.

Why does the map link you have go to 7447 N. Louise Ave, los angeles, ca. And the article says 4700 block?

As a cyclist, the biggest worrie are the right turners and the doors. This being in my neighborhood. It really sucks.

the address has been fixed on the post, but the google map link was always correct. thanks for the catch!

Do we know if she was in the road or on the sidewalk? Was it a right hook? It sounds like it was.

We don't know that detail yet. If find out, will let you know.

shit man, that's right 3 blocks away from my house. uuuuughh, sometimes i feel like im counting down the days before i get greased.

Louise Avenue is listed on the LA Draft Bike Plan "Proposed Bicycle Network" as an "infeasible" bikeways improvement.

what does it mean by "infeasable"?

i actually like using louise because it seems fairly safe.

We're unclear on when "infeasable" became an engineering standard but that's how Louise is designated. Good questions for the LADOT Bikeways staff at tomorrow night's Bicycle Advisory Committee meeting @ 7pm @ Parker Center downtown.

I was there and can tell you how it happened. The cyclist was on the sidewalk, headed South on Louise between Saticoy and Sherman Way. She was on the East side of Louise, probably going from Ralphs and Louise Park as was her custom. The truck driver was on Valerio headed West and turning right to go North. So, she came off of the sidewalk to cross Valerio the same was a pedestrian would.

The truck driver was hauling telephone poles and apparently did not see her as he was maneuvering a tricky turn with such a long load on a small street. When he found out what happened, he suffered a heart attack and was taken to the hospital.

I would like to amend my previous post but there does not seen to be an Edit button. I just heard from a someone who knows her that she was coming from Computer Class. Anyway, my point was, for those who know the area, that she was on the same side of the street as Ralphs and the park.

Friends of the bicyclist say that she was in her early 30's. She also leaves behind 2 children.

There seems to be some confusion about the truck. It was not a small truck. It was a semi-truck hauling telephone poles. When the bicyclist came off the curb, she was in his blind spot.
