Photos: Prop 8 Protest in East Los Angeles

One of the first protests of many in the Los Angeles area today took place at the East Los Angeles Recorder Office on Cesar Chavez Avenue. Around 100 people, who would have preferred to be celebrating, were prepared with Repeal Prop 8 in 2010 signs. They chanted in front of news cameras while a few couples waited in line to get marriage proposals, an exercise in purposeful futility. After being denied, the couples refused to leave saying they would wait until gay marriage is legal in California. Eventually, they left shortly after 3 p.m.

Can we just lump all these Prop 8 posts together?

I am all for gay rights, and I think it sucks that all of this is going on, but enough with the coverage of every little protest around town.

We've only covered one protest out of like 10 :)

Must've been a sale at American Apparel.

As much as it pains me to admit it, OH SNYAP!

+1 zing UA. Dammit.

Also, FWIW, if the lead up to the Iraq war taught us anything, protests, especially teeny tiny ones, are ineffective at best and kind of pointless. People either don't pay attention, or only people who already agree do.

Plus, what are they protesting? The fact that a shitty, evil law was deemed to be constitutional under a strict reading of CA's regrettably labrythine and internally-contradictory constitution? It's not like protesting, in LA of all places, is going to make a difference. Everyone here already agrees with you! And since this was passed in a ballot initiative, the state legislature can't do jack about it.

More effective action should include organizing a repeal ballot initiative while at the same time building public support for equal marriage rights. One well placed TV ad will do more than a thousand 100 people protests.

And meanwhile, it's worth repeating: 100 people, making extravagent, unrealistic promises, just makes them look dumb, as UA managed to point out.

I was at the WeHo/Hollywood protest last night and there were LOTS of signs saying "Repeal Prop 8 in 2010." I'm not sure putting it on the ballot again next year is going to be the right move (think how bad it would look if it ended up losing 53-47, for example), but it's most likely the next step.

"I am all for gay rights, and I think it sucks that all of this is going on, but enough with the coverage of every little protest around town."

A tired scroll finger, it's the burden we must all bear.

Yeah, Rosa Parks looked RIDICULOUS when she just sat there on that bus.

I mean, what a buffoon she was!

Not the same thing man. Not even close.

Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man, a crime where she lived. Her actions directly challenged the law.

100 people showing up for an ineffective protest = not remotely similar.

Not the same thing man. Not even close.

Thank You.

Protest is protest, regardless of what you deem "ineffective."

I'm proud of all those queer Rosa Parks out there doing what they feel they need to do.

Youre kidding right? That is not even CLOSE to the same thing.

I see Ross got at it too...

Guess I am just bitter that all of those protesters are not working on this perfect sunny weather day.

There's one in WeHo tonight that's basically making a BIG circle around my house.

For a whole hour and a half. How inspiring.

I wonder how they'd manage against water cannons and police dogs.

Neither water cannons nor police dogs were used on Rosa's bus.

So you only view protest measures by heteros as valid?

Guess some of you need to check out the documentary of "The Life and Times of Harvey Milk" -- not the Sean Penn film.
