One of Gil Cedillo's campaign mailers depicting Pleitez as a "Party Animal"
But his opponent, Cedillo, proved that things can get pretty unfriendly in the Facebook era, when he made use of some pictures on Pleitez's profile in a smear campaign against his challenger, according to the LA Times. Cedillo, who wound up losing the race with Pleitez to Judy Chu, "used photos from Pleitez's Facebook page in attack mailers intended to undercut the candidate's clean-cut image."
In one mailer sent out by Cedillo, an image of nicely-dressed young people, including Pleitez, mugging for the camera, was accompanied by this caption, in English and Spanish: "Should this man represent you in the House of Representatives or in 'Animal House'?" Some of the images were from an event held during a Stanford semester abroad trip, and the "party animals" labeled by the Cedillo campaign actually young people who are now in graduate school working on law degrees or PhDs, or working as "teachers, nurses, directors of nonprofit groups," and the like.
The Cedillo campaign also pointed out the frequent posing of Pleitez and his friends making "gang signs,"--you know, two fingers raised in a "V" for peace, or as "the symbol of Voto Latino, a national voter outreach program." One such gangster depicted, but likely not recognized by the Cedillo camp, is actress Rosario Dawson.
So were Pleitez's Facebook photos a liability? Some voters may have been scared off, but many young voters were horrified by Cedillo's tactics, not Pleitez's pictures. However "Cedillo saw nothing wrong with ads 'intended to show voters that Mr. Pleitez lacks not only the experience to be a member of Congress, but also the maturity,'" explained the campaign.
Considering Cedillo's approach in the Facebook era, the question of "maturity" might well rest in the other camp.

BUSTED!
It's no big surprise that someone like Gil Cedillo would pull a scare tactic like that. I for one am glad that he didn't win the congressional race. As for Pleitez, he's only guilty for being normal.
This will happen for the next 15 years until people are used to the whole lives of candidates being caught on camera. Younger voters will understand. Older votes will be scared off. And like in all elections, the candidate's issues, ideas and policies will be drowned out... and therefore, everyone will lose.
Exactly, Lindsay, the question of maturity DOES lie in Cedillo's camp. These are such desperate and stupid smear tactics.
I am sorry to disappoint you all, but politics is a tough game.
Gil was tagged as Mexican who needs to know his place and Chu's camp played the race card and sent a mailer targeting Republican voters (that is why you are not aware of this if you were a democrat) indicating that Gil is nothing but a drunken Mexican who spends money in fancy hotels.
It played great in San Marino.
No outcry from Gil's camp, but he responded.
I never heard a word of this supposed righteous from Emanuel's camp or his supporters. Why? Because he got a great racist smear free of charge against his opponent.
Finally, the mailer simply asked the obvious.
Would you want this person representing you in Congress, who no more than two years ago was partying it up in Chile and glamorizing the use of gang symbols (Yes they are gang symbols and they do bring a chill to many people) with Hollywood celebrities, while the rest of us working stiffs were struggling with keeping our jobs, funding our kid's education and healthcare, and keeping food on the table?
It is fair question and Emanuel has only himself to blame for the content. Gil had a Facebook Page that was carefully managed. May be next time Emanuel should do the same.
i'm glad that cedillo fool lost.
I'm curious as to what mailer LatinoNation is talking about. San Marino is not even in the 32nd district! It's in Adam Schiff's district.I actually live in the district with an Independent, Dem, and Rep (mix of roomies) I never saw a mailer from Chu that said he was a drunken Mexican. What I did see was a hit piece that reprinted Cedillo's $120,000 in campaign spending on personal items that was in the LA Times. Not sure how you connote "drunken mexican" and "San Marino" with that.
