After the death of a man crossing the Metro Blue Line tracks yesterday afternoon, a 49-year-old woman was left in critical condition when she was hit and trapped beneath the train shortly before 8 p.m. near Flower and Venice in downtown. Yesterday's incidents increase the train line's statistics to 93 deaths and 826 accidents, according to transit advocate Damien Goodmon who today is calling for Congressional investigation and hearing. "It is the deadliest light rail train in the nation," a news release from his Citizens' Campaign to Fix the Expo Rail Line group said. On Wednesday, a woman was killed by a Metro bus downtown when she was hit near City Hall

i can't believe this is happening. :( wtf Metro?
Doesn't the train have the right of way? Both vehicles and pedestrians are to clear the tracks when a train is approaching. I don't think we can blame the train driver here. If a pedestrian steps in front of a train...they are trying to kill themselves.
I apologize for not living downtown / knowing much about this line at all, but what are the safeguards here? Does this line just run at street level with the expectation that people will get out of the way (sort of like a regular train crossing)? How easy is it to get in front of one of these things?
What was the period for the accidents/death? How many years/months, etc. did it take to get that number? These numbers are important.
And Mr. Goodmon? As always: [citation needed] . Please stop calling this man a Transit Advocate when he is anything but.

Can I point out that the number of car-related fatalities utterly dwarfs the number of metro-related fatalities?
Honestly, from a public health perspective, the car is by far the greatest risk to human life out there--worse than cancer or heart disease.
Let's not lose perspective on the fact that, by getting cars off the road, Metro saves lives.
Since it runs on rails it takes a big act of carelessness to be hit by the train.
I'm sorry but, how hard is it to avoid a frigging train? It's not like it's sneaking up on you or coming around a corner.
This kind of irresponsible twisting of the facts by the afforementioned group is akin to the Herald Tribune's reportage of the Red Line (and other) street car accidents in Los Angeles during the first half of the 20th century- someone with an obvious agenda manipulating statistics to suit it.
The BLUE LINE is a RACIST SHAME TRAIN that eats BLACK PEOPLE and must consume more BLACK PEOPLE every year to sustain METRO'S terrible THIRST for BLOOD.
There, I got that out of the way.
I think this comment from another poster here should get more exposure.
"Turns out that was my neighbor, the one who sat outside my window every day for the past 3 years trying to look in and the reason I've kept my blinds closed the last few years, and the one who whistled to me at night when I would go feed my dogs."
So at the very least one of those 93 fatalities was a good thing!
rest in peace mom! :(
