Bus Runs Over, Kills Woman Near City Hall

metro_bus_pedestrian_fatal.jpg For the second time this year, a bus making a turn has fatally struck a pedestrian crossing the street. It was about 7:25 p.m. at Temple and Spring when the woman, believed to be in her 30s, crossed the street correctly on a green light, but seemingly at an angle, a Metro spokesperson told the LA Times. Earlier this year, a DASH bus making a turn killed a woman at 5th and Flower near Central Library.

The busses are the worst drivers in Los Angeles. They drive selfishly and obliviously, bullying their way around in traffic. They're the biggest danger on the streets.

I don't deny that bus drivers are aggressive, but you have to understand the flip side of this. You're in one of the congestion capitals of America, where normal drivers are a-holes 24-7. No one likes to be behind a bus, and everyone likes to get where they're going as quickly as possible. Without some level of aggression behind the wheel, bus drivers would literally get nowhere.

If you've never driven an 18-wheeler (I have) or know someone who does on a regular basis, you might not understand this need for aggressive tactics. But being that big, with such slow acceleration, means you need to do something in order to get anywhere.

Obviously something went wrong here, but I'm not sure you can correctly claim statements like "busses are the worst drivers in Los Angeles". Let's check some stats and traffic accidents and (even allowing for the number of buses vs the number of cars) we'll see which vehicle type gets into more accidents, statistically.

I don't wish to blame the bus driver or the deceased in this tragedy. Regardless of fault, there is a family mourning the sudden death of their wife, mother, sister, daughter, cousin and friend. And a bus driver "possibly" striken with despair, worry and concern over this tragic accident.
With all due respect to this forum, please refrain from assuming what, why and how she was in her terrible situation and i will do the same to not assume the bus driver was reckless or at any fault in her own terrible situation.
The story will undoubtedly unfold and all assumptions will be answered and put to rest.
In the meantime, I will continue to console my friend's loss in her time of mourning and grief. I will support her family as much as needed.

This is very sad and a waste, and it hammers home the concept that one should always stay in the marked crosswalk when crossing a street. It's dangerous and it's selfish to leave the crosswalk to cut off some of your walking distance.

That said, yeah, buses are aggressive in LA, but when you're riding on one, you want them to drive that way. When you're cut off my one, you want them to be passive and courteous.

I have a question? Was this turn a left turn or a right turn.

LA bus drivers are flat out OUT OF CONTROL. I've almost been hit, ran off the road, etc. numerous times. However, I have also been driving downtown and about to make a turn, when someone darts out into the crosswalk while the the red hand has started flashing. I try to be cautious because I've almost been hit riding my bike through crosswalks before. Let's see how this story unfolds. Hopefully it's not the case of another bus driver texting or talking on their cell phone while driving.

I made no assumptions about the driver or the pedestrian. I commented on bus drivers in general.

And don't lecture me about how busses are entitled to drive dangerously. It doesn't matter what size vehicle you are, if you change lanes without signaling or drift into adjacent lanes while there is traffic present, you are driving irresponsibly.

I'm not talking about driving aggressively. I'm talking about driving dangerously. There's a significant difference. Bus drivers seem to think they're entitled to drive as if they are any other car on the road, but they're not. The fact is that they are slower and bigger. They need to come to terms with their handicap and behave accordingly.

Besides, this person was legally crossing the street. The bus turned into her. How is that excused under "aggressive driving"? That's careless driving.

Oh, and using the term "pwned"? That makes you the chump.
