Driving on the 5 freeway this morning in the Newhall Pass between Los Angeles and the Santa Clarita Valley, a Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority ranger spotted a dead mountain lion on the center divider near Calgrove Blvd. Presumably, it was hit trying to cross the freeway.
The National Park Service, which tracks some mountain lions within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, took note on their Twitter account. Based on preliminary information, this particular lion, only 90 pounds and fairley young, had no tracking collar on him, said Superintendent Woody Smeck.
The cougar's body will now go into the hands of California Fish & Game, who usually takes deceased mountain lions to hatcheries, tags them, performs research if needed and sends it to a private research lab if requested.
There are thousands of mountain lions in California. Fish & Game has set up a nice webpage about how to best live among them.

Okay, shit.. That is so sad. Did ya hafta put an image of it? :(
It is important for everyone to see the image of it.
These creatures are being forced out of their habitat, starved, and ill-treated because of human encroachment into their territory. We need to see the end result of our greed for land and resources.
I do admit it is a sad photo, but as skd said, this is all a result of human development. Just like all the bear sightings, these cats are being stretched thin with the resources left for them.
Now I feel sad And guilty.
yeah that's sad, how about an image warning for us RSS folks.
Awww so sad, look at those paws.
OMG that's the exit you get off to go to my parents' house! yikes. poor lil lion. :(
So sad.
sad, but then again, lots of families have new McMansions to live in. So, gotta take the good with the bad.
kidding. that breaks my heart.
What a beautiful animal, it is sad that the State of California has steal their land from them, so this is how they will end up! Dead on an almighty highway, so we can drive to more places and kill more lions with our cars. After all we did to the same thing to the Indians took their land from them.
Actually, this is more than sad is an atrocity.
This reminds me of that story about the dog saving the couple from the mountain lion - more like the dog attacking the mountain lion in it's own home!
Big feet!
Which story gets more comments? This, or the one about the guy who was killed on the Blue Line?
This story already has more comments than the Metro Bus accident!
Spokker, I am sure everyone feels just as bad for the
man that was killed on the Blue Line. This blog is for
the cougar. I don't think anyone left the man on the blue to die by himself on a highway. Who knows if the cougar died right away or it suffered for an unknown amount of time. :(
