The Counter Finally Opens in Studio City

The Counter, known for letting customers customize their own burgers anyway they want, finally made its arrival yesterday in Studio City (Ventura Blvd. near Laurel Canyon). The long-awaited restaurant adds to the commercial district's gamut of quality eateries to choose from, including the nearby Artisan Cheese Gallery, Arb Pizza, Vegan Plate and Laurel Tavern.

Because each Counter is a franchise, beer choices differ from the flagship Santa Monica location. Studio City carries Arrogant Bastard, Fat Tire, Hoegaarden, Leffe Brown, Stone Pale Ale and Stella Artois on draft ($5.50) and includes numerous wines and bottled beers on their menu.

The restaurant gives you a clipboard to fill out. First you choose your protein (beef, turkey, veggie burger or grilled chicken) and then add cheeses, toppings (from regular to premium options like honey cured ham, fried eggs and sun-dried tomatos), sauces (garlic aioli, peanut sauce, ginger soy glaze?) and a bun (note that the veggie burger is actually vegan, but buns are not). Prices range from $8.50 and up, depending on how you design your burger.

Next up for The Counter is Pasadena, so watch out!

I once heard ESPN Radio's Colin Cowherd say "The Counter is the Best Burger in America," referencing the original Santa Monica location.

I was just wondering when this was going to open. I am SO THERE for lunch this week.

I ate there on Sunday, and it's good. It's REALLY good. But it is NOT the best burger in America. It's not even the best burger in Los Angeles.

I feel like the Counter suffers the same fate as too many backyard cookouts: believing that just building a huge meat patty will always = a great burger.

People don't go to In N Out for the huge patty, they do because everything combines well and tastes delicious.

This place is great, but I agree that it's not the best burger in town (I prefer the burgers at the Roosevelt Hotel).

Skip the large patties--go for the smallest, because you really don't need more meat--and this way you can add some more toppings. But get the fries and fried onions. VERY good.

That's a really nice selection of beer on tap. Should make a great addition to the neighborhood.

WTF mate!?!?! The burgers are vegan but the buns aren't? What a jip!

all I've got to say is: deep-fried pickle chips ... amen
