Chivas USA survived a relentless D.C. United attack last night to hang on for a 2 - 2 tie at the Home Depot Center.
D.C. nearly opened the scoring at the 9th minute off a corner kick, but Chivas USA shrugged it off and slowly began to assert its game. By the 20th minute, the red-and-whites were regularly hovering around the United goal and generated some great chances. Forward Eduardo Lillingston hit the post minutes before fellow forward Maykel Galindo opened the scoring.
Galindo broke in on the United goal after a missed offside call and easily beat D.C. 'keeper Louis Crayton to give the L.A. side the lead at the 25th minute. Lillingston would have another go about a minute later, this time hitting the cross bar. As the half ended, Lillingston would finally capitalize, giving the home side a 2 - 0 lead before the break.
Brazilian midfielder Fred entered for the visitors at the start of the second half and his presence was key to their comeback. Fred helped kick start the United offense and they began to pressure the Chivas USA defense more and more. By the 70th minute, momentum was clearly shifting in favor of D.C. At the 77th minute, United forward Luciano Emilio got one back for the visitors shortly after Chivas USA 'keeper Zach Thornton made a great save to deny him a goal on a previous play.
The goal helped motivate the visitors further and they took greater control of the game in the final minutes. At the 85th minute, Thornton punched out a United cross, but his clearance landed at the feet of United midfielder Santino Quaranta about 25 yards out and left Thornton a bit out of position. Quaranta put in a great low shot that made its way through the maze of players in the box and ended up in the back of the net. Quaranta's goal tied the game for a final score of 2 - 2.
The tie is the second for the red-and-whites and helps retain their undefeated status at home and 8 point lead on the overall standings. Thornton's performance also broke the Chivas USA record for the most consecutive minutes without allowing a goal. The record was previously held by Brad Guzan
Last night's match was the second of the three scheduled for this weekend at the Home Depot Center. It began on Friday when Los Angeles Sol beat Sky Blue FC 1 - 0 in Women's Professional Soccer league action. Then came Chivas USA's draw last night. Today, the Galaxy will take on the defending MLS Cup champion Columbus Crew at the Home Depot Center to close out the busy soccer weekend.
The Galaxy are coming off a tough road match in Seattle last weekend which ended in a draw. The draw extended the blue-and-gold's undefeated streak to 7 games, but the unfortunate part about that stat is that only 1 victory has been registered in that span. Clearly, a draw is better than a loss, but at said pace, when the final third of the season comes around, they may once again find themselves in a mad scramble for victories to try to sneak into the playoffs as has been the case the last 3 years. The team needs a victory in order to build some confidence and start moving up in the standings.
Columbus will prove to be an interesting challenge. The defending champion has also had a difficult start and their only victory so far came last week. Despite their misfortune, their 1 - 2 - 5 record is misleading. With a bit of luck, they may have been able to turn one or more of their draws into victories.
For the Galaxy, a big positive -- beyond only having one loss -- is that their defense is playing well. Let's see how they stack up against the Crew this afternoon.
