Houston Rockets defeat LA Lakers 95-80. You've got to be fucking kidding me. Let's take a look at the box score. The Lakers attempted 23 threes in this loss. In game five the Lakers attempted 13. While the Lakers were trailing by 15 in the second quarter it was very frustrating to see them settle for jump shots rather than take it to the hole. In the third quarter they responded well and cut the deficit to two, but then their defense fell apart. They made Luis Scola look like James Worthy while Pau Gasol looked like a big stiff. So let's review. No Tracy McGrady. No Yao Ming. No wins against the Lakers in the regular season. And now we're going to a game seven?
Detroit Red Wings defeat Anaheim Ducks 4-3. And just like that the Ducks season is over though they certainly didn't give it away like the Washington Capitols did Wednesday night. While it looked like the Red Wings would be on their way to a blow out leading by two goals early in the second period, the Ducks made the most of their shots getting two tip in goals by Teemu Selanne and Corey Perry in the period. Trailing 3-2 in the third period the Ducks took advantage of a stick on the ice and used that to net the tying goal by Bobby Ryan. With the Ducks hoping to take the game to overtime Dan Cleary came in with an unexpected shot to goalie Jonas Hiller to net the winning goal with three minutes remaining. It was a hard fought series and coincidentally the first seven-game series between the Ducks and Wings. The Wings now face the Chicago Blackhawks in an Original Six Western Conference Finals.
LA Dodgers defeat Philadelphia Phillies 5-3 (10). I won't lie. When the Dodgers lost the first game of the series on Monday, it looked like this stretch of games would be very painful. But the Dodgers proved even in that loss that they would scrap to the very end. In a pitching battle between Chad Billingsley and Cole Hamels it would be a tight game. But with the Dodgers leading 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth and the game in Jonathan Broxton's hands it seemed inevitable. Only Broxton couldn't find the strike zone and blew the save giving up two runs to send it to extra innings. The Dodgers responded right back with two outs in the 10th with a single by Andre Ethier and an RBI double by Russell Martin. After James Loney was intentionally walked Matt Kemp put the bow on top with his own RBI double. Ramon Troncoso made sure there was no come back by the Phillies getting the save. The Dodgers now go down to Florida for a weekend series.
LA Angels defeat Boston Red Sox 5-4 (12). It's really tough to win a game when you strand 17 runners on base. Ask the Red Sox. They managed 15 hits and five walks but could only parlay that two four runs. A lot can be credited to the Angels especially Torii Hunter who caught a ball hit to deep center by Dustin Pedroia in the tenth inning with Jacoby Ellsbury on second. He made the running catch, hit the wall, spun around and threw the ball back into the infield keeping Ellsbury on second. Jeff Mathis won the game for the Angels in the 12th hitting a drive to left center to drive Reggie Willits home from second. The Angels head over to Texas to face the division leading Rangers over the weekend.
Here is a little something to calm everyone down after the shenanigans in Houston:

the lakers need to stop sucking. i think i show more intensity yelling at my tv screen than the lakers do playing defense. its pitiful.
Pau Gasol: Choke-a-tron
Pau just needs to take the ball to the hole while facing off on Hayes or Landry or whoever Houston throws at him. They cannot guard him face up as was evident in Game 6.
I'm tired of the cute shit the Lakers try and pull off. They just need to go with what works and get it done. I'll have more on this series tomorrow.
nice round-up Bramlett, glad you're on the beat.
The Ducks/Wings game was the best of the series. I ended up going to a bar after work to catch the last period. At least they didn't go down without a fight.
I didn't see the game since I was at work, but I did listen to it online. The Ducks made a respectable showing in this game. But frankly it was hard writing about them since I'm a Kings fan.
Sadly, every year the Kings are two years away from being good. Sigh. Luckily my #1 team is the PENS.
I know, right? It's been a "rebuilding year" for the Kings since Gretzky retired.
Seeing how the Kings ended the season, if Dean Lombardi makes smart moves then the Kings will be in the playoffs for the next several years.
I am convinced the NBA playoffs are written by Hollywood. They go one needlessly forever milking money from boredom.
Me being from Houston (but now live in hlywd)... I am totally excited that they made it to game 7. That's all I really wanted to see. Now it's balls to the wall, and the best of the best will win sunday night and move on. (thought secretly I'm rooting for the Rockets)
the kings are the equivalent of the clippers in hockey
Well the difference with the Kings and the Clippers is that the Kings have actually been in the Stanley Cup Finals. That and they actually have fans.
I'm not saying they're that much greater than the Clippers.
The Lakers got me so riled up that I turned off the TV after the first 4 mins. At this point I'm going to blame Jackson for not motivating/prepping the team properly. Zen my ass.
