After a long car chase yesterday afternoon that whipped through freeways and city streets of the San Gabriel Valley, the car careened into a car and the driver split into a neighborhood, but soon gave up once he realized there was no where to go. That's where this video from NBC Los Angeles comes in: the first El Monte police officer to reach the suspect, who is already on the ground with his hands spread, kicks him in the head. Now the ACLU is seeking a suspension for that officer.

gah! i hate seeing stuff like this. no doubt the dude deserves to be punished (he put a lot of lives at risk by leading the cops in a car chase), but heat-of-the-moment violence like this when the suspect is on the ground is the kinda thing that makes police look really bad. if i were a cop this would make me cringe. what an asshole.
How many lives did he put in danger before getting kicked in the head? Maybe that should be the least of his problems. He should be lucky Chopper wasn't turned loose to sick balls.
I mean seriously, who hi-fives these days? Get with the program and terrorist fist bump you pigs.
This guy deserves it, but not from our police officers, they need to uphold to law. But I'm not against the cops holding him down while the people this asshole nearly hurt kicks him in the head a few times.
Yeah this is a tough one. Cops should not be getting out of control like that but at the same time I find it difficult to have sympathy for the guy. I'm pretty sure if I or someone I know was in the car he ran into I wouldn't have a problem with turning the other way...
Suspension? He should be fired and charged with a crime. The guy who high-fives him should be suspended.
It's not a tough one at all. He wasn't resisting at that point, so he shouldn't have gotten kicked in the head.
Another example how power corrupts...
El Monte Police administration should be embarrassed as hell about this video. The officers really come off as amateurish and undisciplined. A hard kick to the head of a guy who's lying prone and had already given up? And a high five for cuffing him? C'mon, seriously, boys. This incident will remain a black eye to the department even after the suspect is out of jail. It will be replayed over and over and over again...just as NBC does in the video here.
Surely they must teach these guys at the Academy that it's a mortal sin to turn bad guys into victims!
Their first mistake was not taking the dog off his leash and letting the dog track the guy down. Because when they arrived to the dude all mauled up, noone would've blamed them or the dog. Thats just what dogs are supposed to do.
Linkracer, you confuse enforcement with punishment. It's not the cops job to punish or exact retribution, however much they might want to. In this case their job was to apprehend bring the guy to justice. Saying they should have released the dog so it could maul the guy just shows you have a serious sadistic side.
you guys are a bunch of self-righteous hypocrites. you blame the cop but if that kid had run over one of your loved ones you wouldn't give a shit. lay off, the cop was pissed because that kid endangered lives. sure, that cop isn't a paragon of self-control - but seriously, just be glad nobody died as the result of that kid's behavior.
Kicking him in the head after the fact accomplishes what? Because this cop, a professional who is presumably trained for this situation, the suspect not only has reason to claim he was victimized, but might be able to get a large settlement at the expense of the people of El Monte. Plus I wouldn't be surprised if the punishment for the driver's crime is reduced because of this. So yea, the cop was pissed. But because he couldn't contain that anger, the suspect will likely be rewarded.
ITA db a police officer's job is to BRING a perp to justice not dispense it.
Jack, talk after you've been kicked in the head by a cop, 'till them STFU.
Jack, please never become a cop. If you're already one, please consider other work. If he had run over a loved one of mine, kicking him in the head wouldn't fix anything. Vengeance isn't justice.
damn that kid runs fast - how did he not out run that overweight copper?
That violence from the cop was totally unnecessary and he should turn in his badge. The kid was PASSED OUT!
Jeremy ain't you a saint. Rdm24, the kid was NOT passed out lol. db, I totally agree with you. I'm not saying the cop was in the right - I'm just saying I UNDERSTAND what he was going through and the ppl hear who are reacting strongly should look at both sides. Jrb, 1. I've been kicked in the head, it sucks but ain't the fucking end of the world. 2. I didn't say the cop was dispensing justice, I said he was pissed and I understand what he was going through.
OK Jack since we're being so understaning herelet's look at what you're "hero" has just accomplished.
1.) The perp who would have gone to jail for several years will probably now walk. His civil rights were violated during the arrest so he probably won't serve a day.
2.) The perp has just won the lottery! He'll probably walk away with several million in tax payer money. $$$CHA-CHING$$$ Nice work Mr. Po-po!
3.) Mr. Po-po has just tarnished the image of every police officer working the street, and set back years of effort to try and turn the police's image around.
Yea, real hero there Jack.
Wonder if the ACLU fanboys would be singing the same tune if it was THEIR car the suspect careened into, or god forbid, THEIR toddler the idiot killed in a red-light broadsiding, which only by sheer force of luck didn't happen. Funny how that works, hm? Should have stomped his head a few more times in my opinion.
"ACLU fanboys"? So the ACLU doesn't protect your rights, I guess?
I have no recollection of the ACLU ever saying that people shouldn't be allowed to own guns.
That was meant for ishXdavid.
The cop lost his cool when he shouldn't have. The department has rules regarding this behavior should reprimand the officer to the fullest extent of those rules.
I wish the ACLU would fight for my right as a law-abiding citizen to protect myself under the 2nd amendment as passionately as they are sticking up for this felon. I guess some civil rights are more equal than others.
remember..those are STEEL toed boots the officer is wearing...not your normal work boot. that cop could have made a 50 yard field goal with that kick.
i guess it pales in comparison to what the CIA did (does).
its still not right.
the kid was trying to not let his hands get cuffed after the boot to the skull.
on bbc news this clip is #1 and it has the audio commentary from the reporter in the helicopter who trys to make it seem he got kicked in the shoulder not the head..
another shining moment for the world to see what kind of police state we live in here in Los Angeles.
He was killing a black widow spider.
Probably saved the guy's life.
Well then, let's just dispense with all these trials, arrests, and all that legal bull shit, and just line 'em up and shoot 'em!
It was a *joke*, jrb.
BTW, still using that stale avatar I see. How much longer before baby Barack owns the presidency?
6 months? 9 months? a year?...
I'm having trouble finding an avatar that's as offensive to right wingers as this one is.
For me, it's not offensive, just out of date.
Why not just use a pic of Obama?
You know how much we right-winger hate blacks.
Janeane said so.
"You know how much we right-winger hate blacks."
That's not true. These days most right wingers have seen the value in being equal opportunity exploiters.
The cross burners and goose steppers who are still hanging on to their outright hate probably don't even vote or identify as Repubies any more.
True equality? Well that's an issue that got proven when the Bushistas threw Colin Powell under the bus even after he went to the UN and lied for them. Just think, you guys could have been running an African American candidate for President in the last election if they hadn't.
The canine officer who initiated the high-five came onto the scene after the head kick.
He was not responding to the kick but rather the successful arrest after a long and potentially dangerous pursuit.
What a load of crap...
"The kick to the head delivered by an El Monte police officer to a car-chase suspect lying on the ground at the end of a televised high-speed pursuit was a legally justified “distraction blow," an attorney for the police union said today."
So what's next, a "distraction bullet to the head" just to make sure they have the suspect completely subdued?
Sorry if I seem callous but if you run from the police then you get what you get.
