DVD Tuesday: Take this!

It's still hard to believe that a relatively generic film like Taken became such a huge box-office hit. There certainly aren't that many huge Liam Neeson fans and the luscious Maggie Grace didn't even take her kit off so that's not what drew crowds. Chalk it up to William Goldman's old aphorism: "Nobody knows anything." You know a franchise is in deep trouble when the star of the franchise stops appearing in the movies. Still, Rhona Mitra is slightly hotter than Kate Beckinsale...hmmm. Star Trek is a huge hit in theaters so roll out the piggyback marketing! Taking Chance was a nicely balanced film about the Iraq War. Naturally, no one saw it.

What a thing it must be to be Bruce Campbell. Unknown by enough people that he can probably live a pretty normal life in public, and yet idolized by a select minority to such a degree that he never feels unappreciated. That, friends, is a good life for a working actor. The same can not be said for Tyler Hansbrough who is probably swamped everywhere he goes in Chapel Hill. At least his presumably mediocre career in the NBA will allow him some anonymity. Is there a movie that exceeded expectations as much as Galaxy Quest? I've seen it at least 25 times, and I'd watch it again it it were on now. Who woulda thunk it: Tim Allen...funny?
