Old Thompson Submachine Gun Turned in at Gun Buyback*

thompsonsubmachinegun.png Among the nearly 1,700 guns turned in at this weekend's gun buyback program was an old looking thompson submachine gun, finds Jason Kandel over at the Daily News' Mean Streets blog. It was "made famous, or infamous, in one of a score of movies about mobsters terrorizing American streets during Prohibition," he says. Also among guns was a grenade launcher turned in at the Valley's Topanga Station. See a general list of what kind of guns and where they were exchanged here. *UPDATE: LAist readers seem to agree, the gun is not a Thompson. See the discussion below:

That is not a Thompson.

Oh, do tell, what is it? Thanks!

It's not a Thompson sub-machine gun, it's an assault shotgun with a drum magazine. Too distant to see model and gauge, but possibly an old Saiga 12-gauge. The magazine for a thompson would only be as thick as a .45 cal bullet is long, so would be only half as thick as the magazine in the photo. Barrel and stock are both longer than on a Thompson as well.

That was a snotty reply!
And why the asterisk and the UPDATE?

Just change the headline and problem is solved!
Many people won't even notice the update anyway.

It sure is. You can tell by the back of the barrel, it's kinda squareish.

Yeah. The boyfriend says it's not a Tommy. Same reasons mistcell gave.

Looks like a striker streetsweeper shotgun.

Just look at the wikipedia page you linked to, clearly not a thompson. too crappy/stamped looking, look at that cheapo folding stamped stock. it screams eastern european.

Also check out that whacky charging handle, the thompson has a nice little charging handle right on the receiver.

Ok found it, liuser is right it's a striker drum fed shotgun:

Thanks for figuring that out! Just curious, what Wikipedia link, though?

Props to eecue for knowing his way around a gun shack.

well done, sir.

Oh sorry, the wikipedia link is on the referring article.

Thompson Twins > Thompson machiner.

If you now know the gun in question wasn't a Thompson, why can't you be bothered to correct the sensationalist headline? If the LA Times did the same thing, I'm sure you'd be calling them on it.

That was the point of the * and *UPDATE.
