Beer Fest @ Echoplex today.
But if you like beer that's dark as black coffee or can appreciate the nuances between an ale and a lager, then keep reading.
The Los Angeles Craft and Artisanal Beer Appreciation League is holding the first Craft Beer Fest LA today from 2-9 pm. The League’s formula is simple: beer + food = heaven. Fifteen California breweries (including Craftsman -- one of LAist’s favorites) will be pouring at least two handcrafted beers each.
Not only that, but there will be top-notch food for noshing, including vegan snacks from Pure Luck, artisan cheese pairings, beer-themed treats like bar nuts, ale cupcakes and stout ice cream from, drumroll, please: Scoops.
At $30, tickets may seem a little steep, but that covers overs beer, food, brewery roundtables and live music. Proceeds from the day’s event will benefit 826LA, Dave Eggers’ nonprofit writing and literacy center for kids.
LA CABAL closed online presale after selling 500 tickets, but more will be available at the door (cash only). We suggest getting there early to ensure time for proper sipping and sampling.

Will they be serving the beer in the crappy plastic cups the echoplex uses?
Nope, everyone got a 4 oz glass with the logo on it and the best part is you got to keep it as a souvenir. We, the Uncouth Gourmands, had a great time.

I've been to several beer tastings or microbrew fests, and this one was exactly what a beer festival should be. Fourteen brewers with a total of 28 samples of beer. It was extremely well organized. I got there early, and I'm glad I did. It got crowded about an hour in, and the food (provided by multiple local restaurants, like Scoops, Pure Luck and Library Bar) ran out after a few hours. But it was for a non-profit, so I didn't mind standing in the lines later on. The beer and food were great, too. They handed out 4oz glasses at the door with tickets for the tastings - definitely enough tickets. I did expect plastic cups, but this gave it an extra sumthin-sumthin. Also, live entertainment. The crappy beer festival at Santa Anita Park WISHES it could be this fun.
Also, yesterday was my birthday, so this totally contributed to my wonderful day. :-)
