LAst Night's Action: History on Cinco de Doyer

LA Dodgers defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1. Manny did the hat dance in left field. Folklorico dancers did their thing between innings. On this Cinco de Mayo, the Dodgers etched their names in the history books tying the 1911 Detroit Tigers for consecutive home wins to start the season at 12-0. Ole Droopy Jeff Weaver on his second tour with the Dodgers pitched a good game giving up only one run on five hits in five innings pitched. The Dodgers were gifted all three of their runs in the first inning thanks to two DBack errors. While DBacks starter Max Scherzer pitched a good game, yet again his offense gave him no run support allowing him to fall to 0-3 with a very respectable 3.38 ERA. The Dodgers now look to continue their home dominance with a two game series against the awful pitching of the Washington Nationals.

Anaheim Ducks defeat Detroit Red Wings 2-1. The stats say the Red Wings should have won. Namely Detroit outshot Anaheim 46-23. In fact the Ducks were outshot 35-9 in the final two periods. But Jonas Hiller put on a (as Helene Elliot of the LA Times called it) Giguerian performance by only allowing the one power play goal by Henrik Zetterberg 14:20 into the second period. The Red Wings got completely hosed at the end of the game after Marian Hossa scored the apparent tying goal in the last minute of the game. But the zebras blew the whistle prematurely before the puck crossed the goal thus nullifying the goal. This Ducks team are a lot like the Dodger teams in the 1960s: Maury Wills hits a single, steals second, steals third, scores on a sac fly, Dodger pitching throws a shut out, Dodgers win 1-0. Basically the Ducks squeak in a goal or two while Hiller stops all incoming traffic. Remember that philosophy led the Dodgers to two of three World Series rings in that decade. And the Ducks now take a 2-1 lead over the Red Wings in the Western Conference semifinals.

LA Angels defeat Oakland A's 5-3. The Angels are starting to make a climb back to respectability. Gary Matthews, Jr. got two hits and three RBI to lead the Angels to their third consecutive win. Meanwhile Chone Figgins was the thorn in the A's side going 3-for-4 with a sacrifice fly and two RBI. Shane Loux got the job done pitching seven innings giving up one run on five hits and one walk with three strikeouts in the best outing of his career. Scot Shields was shaky yet again giving up a two-run homer to Matt Holliday in the ninth. Brian Fuentes would have to come in and clean things up. The Angels are now just a game under .500.
