Legalizing Marijuana for all of California? Schwarzenegger says it's 'Time for Debate'

Governor Schwarzenegger on marijuana legalization It looks like Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has taken the debate over marijuana to whole a new level, the Sacramento Bee reports:

The governor was asked about a recent Field Poll [.pdf] showing that 56 percent of registered voters support legalizing and taxing marijuana to raise revenues for cash-strapped California. Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco, has proposed legislation that would legalize the drug for recreational use, rather than just medical purposes.

"Well, I think it's not time for that, but I think it's time for a debate," Schwarzenegger said. "I think all of those ideas of creating extra revenues, I'm always for an open debate on it. And I think we ought to study very carefully what other countries are doing that have legalized marijuana and other drugs, what effect did it have on those countries?"

It's funny how the need for government revenue can so easily change policy, or at least beget serious discussions.

Last summer, a petition floated around trying to get that very debate put on one of the state's ballots. So far, no news on that front, but this looks like it will cure that effort.

Im sorry but that pic is hilarious...

It looks more like an orgy scene than goofy Eastern European smoking weed.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

"Awwww vight theah..."

Austria is in Eastern Europe?

Actually, yes. Well, about half the time. Because it's just an idea, and not a solidified league of nations, people go back and forth.

Try THIS map on for size.

CA would be debt free and rolling in 'green' if we legalized.

At one time there was prohibition, that prevented the public from purchasing or even drinking alcohol... and now pot... Although, I dont condone either, we should look at legalizing marijuana, taxing it, and looking for revenue to ail the shortfalls of a budget.

Unfortunately, it has to be done on a federally, and cannot be passed through on a state level. There is no reason it shouldn't! It should be treated as alcohol is treated.
Drinking while driving, underage usage, etc.... The same fines would be in effect.

Good luck passing this with all the hard core conservatives, and liquor lobbyists.
These are the ones you'd be arguing with. They dont want anyone smoking weed!
They want you drunk!
