May Day! Photos from the Echo Park March

Around 500 people gathered in Echo Park yesterday for the "May First Day of Action in Support of Workers Rights" march that ended in downtown. It was one of at least seven marches in Los Angeles that either started and/or ended as one big rally around in the civic center area.

One of the most interesting quotes seen (although not in the above photos) were the masks worn for swine flu but with the phrase "ICE Flu" written on them in reference to the myriad of Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids that have taken place throughout the country, especially in Southern California.

Some great photography as usual Tom.

Certainly not as big a march as in years past. I think a lot of people are freaked out by the swine flu and the prospect of gathering in large numbers. If you talk to people who have family in Mexico, they seen to think it's a lot worse than the Mexican Govt. is letting on.

Thanks jrb
It was hard not to think about the swine flu being in such a large crowd.
I feel fine so I think I made it through the day without catching the swine flu :)

Some people don't know how to not complain.

And some people are just a**holes who make ignorant comments.

Some people don't know how to not complain.

I guess some people have to complain about other people complaining too much.

I must say, it's interesting that May Day rallys in 2009 focus on immigration reform, when it's traditionally been about union solidarity. As far as I know, you can't join a union unless you are here legally.

I wonder what the old guard of labor activists makes of this. Perhaps they see it in a positive light because if those workers were granted legal status then they could join the union and maybe there'd be less undercutting by cheap labor from peoplw who don't have any leverage?

"I wonder what the old guard of labor activists makes of this."

Most of the labor activists that I have met are also in favor of immigration reform. That may be because many are second generation, (fill in the blank), _________ Americans.
