The ACME Comedy Theatre is hosting the LA Comedy Festival today through May 17. Tonight there are two shows on the schedule. At 8:30 pm has the long-form troupe The Waterbrains, followed by Rick Ramos and the sketch comedy of FUCT. The late show at 9:30 pm has Shredding the Envelope, Adam Harrington and Improperetta. POLITICS
Confused by the May 19 election’s ballot propositions? Didn’t even know there was an election? Then think about attending tonight’s educational forum at the Center for Healthy Communities @ The California Endowment. On the panel is Jean Ross, executive director of the California Budget Project; Janis Hirohama, president, League of Women Voters of California; and Stuart Waldman, president, Valley Industry and Commerce Association. The program will begin with nonpartisan analysis of the ballot measures, followed a question-and-answer session with the audience. The evening will be moderated by KPCC reporter Frank Stoltze. This event is free, but RSVPs are recommended.
NEW MEDIA MIXER
The New Media Vault is a monthly Downtown networking mixer. It’s being held at the Crocker Club tonight from 7:30 pm to midnight. The Vault is a chance to mingle and mix with others from the worlds of TV, film, new media, tech, advertising and venture finance. The event is free, but reservations are needed. And there is a strict dress code: “No flip flops, no baseball caps or beanies, no hoodies, no sports logos, no baggy attire, no athletic attire, no windbreakers, no white tennis shoes, basketball or running shoes, if you choose to wear dark sneakers, and/or t-shirts, we will require you to wear a collared jacket.” Hmm. So good luck with that and have fun!
TALK
Zócalo tackles the subject of veterans’ affairs in a program tonight at the Hammer Museum. Moderated by Jia-Rui Chong, Los Angeles Times Veterans Affairs reporter, the panel discussion will feature medical and military experts -- including Jennifer Sinclair, sister of an Army captain who served in Iraq, Army Major Gen. (Retired) Paul E. Mock, and David Webb, chief of environmental and military medicine at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center Long Beach -- to discuss how to heal the minds and bodies of returning soldiers. The event begins tonight at 7:30 pm, and there’s a hosted wine reception after the program.
FILM
The South East European Film Festival kicks off today and runs through May 3 at the Goethe Institute. Films and filmmakers from Albania, Austria, Turkey, Romania, Serbia, Macedonia and other countries will be represented. Tonight’s opening night film is the Croatian feature Behind the Glass, a drama about a love triangle between an architect, his mistress and his wife.
