Pencil This In: Gardens of Life, Jewish Film Festival

BENEFIT
Just a tad bit over 25 years ago, scientists announced the link between HIV and what was then a mysterious illness, now commonly known as AIDS. Since then, numerous individuals have died from the disease, but numerous other lives have been extended for longer periods thanks to numerous advancements in treatments to combat the disease. Tonight, you too can help the cause by buying something at either the live or silent auction at East West Lounge in West Hollywood. Proceeds will benefit the Development in Gardening project. Event starts at 6:30 PM.

FILM
Today and tomorrow are the final two days of the week long Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival, with movies screening at various locations throughout the L.A. area. Tonight's highlight is Diego Musiak's Letters For Jenny, which coincidently, is also making is L.A. premiere. The movie follows the story of a teenage girl and her path to self-discovery after her mother's death. Screens at 7:30 PM at Laemmle's Town Center in Encino.

ART
Exhibit A Gallery hosts a collection of works by Santa Monica's Greg Pnut Galinsky. Ciego al color features a mix of new original works and 50 hand painted, limited edition Alva fish tail decks by the famed Vans' artist. Through April 30th.

THEATRE
Mark Twain fans should make their way to Long Beach tonight. The International City Theatre presents its production of Twain's only play, Is He Dead? Unpublished until a few years ago, the unique work is a comedy telling the story of a young painter that wishes to gain fame by faking his own death. Tonight is preview night, so it is a few bucks off. Through May 24th.

TALK
Contemporary art takes many shapes and forms. It also has a tendency to be made from a variety of materials, some of which don't stand the test of time all that well. Tonight, the Harold M. Williams Auditorium at the Getty Center hosts a discussion examining some of the challenges in preserving such works. Ethical Dilemmas in the Conservation of Modern and Contemporary Art will discuss the surrounding issues and potential answers to questions such as whether focus should be placed on preserving the original materials versus original appearance? the validity of replicas and various other topics. Starts at 7 PM and it is free.
