Possible Swine Flu Case Prompts School Closure in Claremont

A Catholic elementary school in Claremont has canceled classes for Tuesday because one student is being tested for swine flu. The first grader from Our Lady of the Assumption visited Mexico early last week and is now showing flu-like symptoms.

"[Health Departments from the counties of San Bernardino and Los Angeles have] advised that I keep the school open today and observe precautionary measures, hand washing, covering mouths when coughing or sneezing etc. to avoid potential contamination," Principal Bernadette Boyle wrote on the school's website. "The Archdiocese has decided that, in an abundance of caution, there will be no classes at Our Lady of the Assumption school tomorrow, Tuesday April 28. Parents will be contacted regarding the resumption of classes, pending the outcome of the student’s test results and further recommendations from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. This will also allow us time to do more cleaning in the classrooms and communal areas."

Update: There are now 11 confirmed cases of Swine Flu in California, five of which in San Diego County, five in Imperial County and one in Sacramento County. Gov. Schwarzenegger says "we are prepared."
