REDCAT presents filmmaker Zoe Beloff in the program “Conjuring Specters.” The New York-based artist specializes in variety of cinematic imagery: film, stereoscopic projection performance, interactive media and installation. She is fascinated by phantoms, images that aren’t really there. According to her bio: “She would like to think of herself as an heir to the 19th century mediums whose materialization séances conjured up unconscious desires, in the most theatrical fashion.” A few of her short, experimental films will be screened, and Beloff will be there in person to discuss. The event begins at 8:30 pm and tickets are $9.

It’s green tamale season at El Cholo, and the original restaurant on Western is celebrating by holding a Green Corn Tamales Kick Off Party tonight at 6:30 pm. On the menu: green corn tamales, ceviche tostadas, lobster and shrimp enchiladas, Texas BBQ Pork Chops with mango papaya salsa, Mexican churros with cajeta sauce and more. Reservations are required. The $60 tab includes food, tax and tip.

JF Chen Exhibitions holds its inaugural show “Architectonic,” displaying the unique works of ceramicist Yassi Mazandi and furniture artist Michael. “Both Mazandi and Wilson display new and emerging ideas in the industries of design and art, merging aesthetics with functionality.” The showroom’s open until 5 pm Monday through Friday and Saturdays from 12-5 pm.
TALK
The English Department of Cal State, Dominguez Hills, welcomes Los Angeles writer RJ Smith as its guest speaker for the 2009 Pat Eliet Memorial Lecture tonight at 7 pm at the Loker Student Union. Smith, a former senior editor of Los Angeles Magazine, is author of 2006’s The Great Black Way: L.A. in the 1940s and the Lost African American Renaissance. The event is free and open to the public.

The ArcLight Sherman Oaks screens Steve Martin’s The Jerk tonight at 7:30 pm. Politically incorrect then and now, the film’s about a complete imbecile (Martin), who’s the adopted son of black sharecroppers. You’ll never see anyone so happy about the delivery of a new phone book. Guaranteed.
QUEER THEATRE
The last Monday of every month at Highways Performance Space is dedicated to an evening of new, 10-minute experimental performances by queer artists. “Queer Mondays” is an uncurated performance lab on a first come first serve basis. Open to all artistic disciplines including music, performance art, psychologizing, spoken word, drag, video work, visual art, new media, poetry, ritual, and dance and features performances by local Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Bisexual, and Homo-Ally Queer artists. The evening begins at 7:30 pm and tickets are $5.

Red Hen’s Monday Evenings at the Geffen presents "I Stand Here Ironing" with Judy Grahn, Deena Metzger, and Marianne Wiggins reading at the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater at the Geffen at 7:30 pm tonight. Admission is $20 and $15 for students and seniors.
