Box Office Review: America is Obsessed

In the latest example of Hollywood underestimating the size of the African-American audience, Basic Instinct knock-off Obsessed stormed to the top of the box office this weekend with a healthy take of $28.5M. Last week's lame champ 17 Again ($11.6M/$39.9M) edged out newcomer Fighting ($11.4M) while newbies The Soloist ($9.7M) and Earth rounded out the top 5 ($8.5M). Kiddie hit Monsters vs. Aliens continues to print money as it storms towards the $200M mega-hit benchmark ($8.5M/$174.8M).

After that it was the excellent State of Play ($6.8M/$25.1M), the moronic Hannah Montana ($6.3M/$65.5M), the almost as moronic Fast and Furious ($6M/$145.2M) and the cartoonish Crank: High Voltage ($2.4M/$11.5M). Nursery University topped the limited release crowd ($13,100 per theater) while Tyson ($7818), Il Divo ($7000), Treeless Mountain ($6000) and The Garden ($5000) all had decent openings. The Informers was a disaster ($622) despite the presence of Amber Heard's hot, naked body.
