Is This the Next Pinkberry?

Frozen fads come and go in cycles. Two years ago Pinkberry was all the rage. Two decades ago TCBYs and Hogi Yogis ruled America’s urban and suburban landscape. Now will a simple frozen treat from our 50th state become the next big thing?

For months in the Valencia Promenade (a strip mall down the street from the Town Center) there was a storefront sign that touted “Shave It” was coming. Many customers thought that either an upscale barber shop or a store dedicated to razors and shaving was going to open. (And we probably all thought the same thing: “Those people are going to lose their shirts opening in this economy!”)

But Shave It finally opened nearly three weeks ago, and we were dead wrong. It’s a shop dedicated to Hawaiian shave ice treats, ice cream and interesting combinations of the two.

Traditional shave ice lovers can get flavors like mango, cherry, watermelon, grape, lemon, papaya, banana, guava or less traditional like Hawaiian punch, mocha, jungle juice, cotton candy and bubble gum. The ice is straight up and simple and will set you back about $2.50 a serving.

But the Shave It menu can get a little complicated, too, by creating concoctions that combine ice cream and shaved ice. Think of it like a shave ice sandwich -- a big sno cone in between two layers of ice cream. Their “X-Factor” contains French vanilla shave ice with Brazilian Coffee ice cream; their “Pop Tart” contains contains coconut, pineapple and guava ices on a bed of vanilla bean ice cream.

The store also has a philanthropic bent to it: Eight percent of all profits will go to the Foster a Miracle Foundation, a nonprofit. The Valencia location is the second of three locations that have opened. The Thousand Oaks outlet is open now and one in Norwalk is coming soon.

Even in this crappy economy, Shave It might stand a chance. Especially with a hot summer ahead -- guaranteed in the SCV.

$2.50 for a raspado?? Valgame dios.

Not $2.50 for raspado, because this shaved ice is NOTHING like raspaderos!

These "shave ice treats" only cost one dollar from raspaderos, and I don't have to get in my car to buy one. They come to me!

Failure.

The raspados from the cart I think are much different than the shaved ice. The ice is much finer and softer vs the raspados which seems to be more like crushed ice on a traditional snow cone.

I personally prefer the shaved ice. Easier in the teeth.

I love Raspados too but I need to know when I can get my shaved ice fix. Where are those carts when I need it?

This has been around for years already in the San Gabriel Valley. I think those folks up there are a bit behind in the trend.

Good stuff though.

Most amazing combination of a snow cone and ice cream ever created! I'd choose Shave It over any other dessert place out there. I hope they expand even more and have locations all over California. I HIGHLY recommend trying Shave It ASAP. :)

I walked in with my 2 kids and because I am pregnant they gave me a free Shave it. Its was the best shaved ice that I have ever had. my kids had so much fun walking on this floor that moves. the rootbeer float was by kids favorite. we are hooked. great way to entertain the kids too while I get a little break! thank you Shave It!!

I have to give it to these guys, what a great alternative to all the yogurt shops! The shaved ice is great and they have ice cream too, best of both worlds. I went to their store in Thousand Oaks a while back with a friend of mine, so glad they are in SCV!!! I had cherry shaved ice with vanilla ice cream in it, I would have never thought to put ice cream with shaved ice - but it works and it's goooood.
Check this place out, you won't be disappointed!
