LA Weekly's LA Weekend
Today is the second day of the LA Weekly's LA Weekend. LAist is hungering for this afternoon's Carnivore panel, featuring Mark Peel of Campanile, Octavio Becerra of Palate Food + Wine, Vinny Dotolo from Animal and Susan Feniger of Street in a discussion moderated by Jonathan Gold. But there are other tasty non-food events today, all free, including film screenings, author panel discussions, and musical performances. The Weekly has all the deets, natch.
LA Times Festival of Books
It's rare that the weekend of the LAT Festival of Books isn't blazing hot, but it's looking to be pretty mild today weather-wise, so there goes your last excuse not to make the trip to UCLA and to explore the wonderful world of books. Okay, so with last-minute planning you're going to miss out on getting into some of the panels and talks, but that doesn't mean a visit would be for naught. There are exhibitors, book signings, and stage performances/demos/interviews. Bring something to cart home all your new books in!
Luminous Networks: Sustainability in LA's Chinatown
The opening reception is tonight for the SCI-Arc (Southern California Institute of Architecture) Designed Sustainability Program for Los Angeles’ Chinatown. "Luminous Networks" are on view at the Automat (936 Chung King Road), and will be feted with an opening party from 6-9 this evening. In their renderings, SCI-Arc students present design solutions for a sustainable public space on the popular Chung King Road. SCI-Arc students were asked to address three strands that are the base of sustainable principles: renewable energy, water efficiency and accessibility. Each strand resembles the morphology of a Chinese Dragon, a cultural symbol of auspicious power.
"Dear Fantasy Girl..." Book Release Party
Tonight from 7:00 to 10:00 PM at Freddy and Eddy (12613 Venice Blvd.) you can celebrate the release of “Dear Fantasy Girl
”, the highly praised collection of erotica from Night Xposed! If you're a fan of the stories, here's your chance to meet the man behind the internet's most popular erotica blog. Hang out, enjoy food and drink and lose yourself in readings from the book by the author as he pulls you into the fantasy.
Fresh Fair: Photography Showcase
Fresh Fair is a new concept designed to provide photographers the opportunity to showcase and sell their work directly to collectors and the public. This one of a kind photography fair also allows the public to witness and engage with an exclusive collection of innovative photographers, all exhibiting side-by-side under one roof. This is a great opportunity to get a glimpse of the most cutting edge and contemporary trends in photography. The event is FREE and runs Noon-7 today at Pier 59 Studios West (2415 Michigan Ave, Santa Monica). It's part of the Month of Photography Los Angeles series of events.
