We were offered 3 specials by the waiter who presented them articularly like he's not rushing through it just to get away from you. It's always a turn off when the waiter announces the specials to the table, speeds through them like an auctioneer, and you have no idea what they said. We each got a recommended dish. The Kobe Beef Meatballs looked light to the eyes, but turned out to be heavy on the stomach. The pasta was the perfect al dente and the meatballs were not flaky nor too solid that a fork didn't glide through smoothly. Hey, it's Kobe! The surprise came when you hit the truffle cheese fondue... "Is it too rich," asked the waiter? "No, not really," I replied, but I soon realized that he may be right. The dish is deceptive and unless you haven't eaten all day or are Andre the Giant's son, you will be enjoying a gourmet late night or next day meal. No complaints here! (Melissa Kerkes)
Taste has a reputation in this city. A huge, girthy reputation that must be lived up to when opening a second location in addition to their almost famous spot on Melrose. Their new Pacific Palisades location opened about two months ago and is well aware of who they are, where they've come from, who their new clientele is - and with the same chef at the helm, their second location is guaranteed to be a near-facsimile of the original.
The Palisades location, 538 Palisades Dr. is just off of Sunset and the PCH, in a small strip mall stealing the spotlight from a dry cleaners, a Goodwill, a Pharmacy, and a few other welcoming businesses. It's perfectly tucked just far enough up Sunset that you can duck out of the PCH traffic jam and escape to truffle oil infused dishes and delectable desserts.
The restaurant itself feels like you're sitting down after a hot shower and a day on the slopes in Aspen, the chef has read your mind and tailored the menu to your current craving. Brad, the General Manager opened this location and ironically enough came from a restaurant in Aspen prior to Taste. He agrees with the "ski-lodge" feel and embraces how it is an appropriate pairing with the food.
The glaring difference between the Palisades and the Melrose location is Brunch. The Palisades doesn't serve brunch yet - but they're planning on sometime around the 25th (tomorrow), but don't hold them to that date.
Hint prior to ordering: ask about beer pairings! They will give you the perfect combo to balance the richness of each dish.
