Iconic L.A. radio personality Rick Dees is once again absent from the Southern California radio waves. Dees' departure came due to a change in ownership of his most recent employer Movin' 93.9 FM which took effect late last week. Regardless, many will always remember his many years of great work at KIIS-FM, especially during the 80's. L.A. radio won't be the same without him, but it is unlikely he is gone forever. While the news of the change is bad news for Movin'/Rick Dees fans (and Rick Dees), it may serve the local Spanish language radio market quite well, perhaps helping ignite some competition.
The new 93.9 FM began broadcasting last week under the moniker Exitos 93.9 FM. It offers Spanish language Top 40 hits from the 80's to present and is best described as a cross between K-LOVE 107.5 FM and Super Estrella 107.1 FM. Some featured artists recently heard include Mana, Nek, Juan Gabriel and Marco Antonio Solis.
Long timer K-LOVE has little to worry about, however, Entravision/Super Estrella may want to take notice of the new comers.
Ever since Super Estrella hit the L.A. scene, they've created a near monopoly for themselves within the Rock en Español/Top 40 crowd by simply buying out their competition before they could ever establish any sort of foothold. As a result, a once promising Rock en Español/Top 40 L.A. radio scene was turned into a constantly repeated 2 hour loop of music that is largely devoid of artistic vision and tends to feature the same artists every time the loop is updated. Given the current economic situation, Entravision may have a hard time figuring out how to fund a take over of Exitos, at least for a couple of years.
Perhaps too long to prevent Exitos from establishing a foothold.

why don't we just get rid of all the radio in LA because that is what they are doing. they should just give you a free mp3 player with your new car..
awesome! more retard music
As Magaña said, nice way to put down another culture's music.
/sarc
Top 40 in Spanish is probably just as awful as English Top 40.
Did you use Rick Dees and great in the same sentence?
I don't think CDs/MP3 players are the "answer" to lack of quality music on the airwaves, @mattjack. It simply served to further segregate and subdivide the music industry. Mostly, we'll just end up with even more douchebags walking around saying, "OMG, the music I listen to is SO cool and I'm sure you've NEVER heard of it!" Campaign for better radio. Don't support ClearChannel.
@mattjack -- I think we are getting close to that point. At least with an MP3 player we would be able to make longer length loops of music...and of music WE like. LOL
@jamesey -- Nice way to put down an entire culture's music. And you are the one that complains about Chivas fans not having class. Maybe you should look up the term first.
@msmerymac -- LOL. I did indeed. Believe it or not, he made KIIS big bux. He was the sh*t during the 80's. I don't know anyone that didn't listen to him in his prime. Maybe I am showing my age a bit too much. ;)
I don't see Exitos working so well in L.A. It's competing with K-LOVE, Super Estrella, and somewhat with Recuerdos 103.9. Like you said, Angel, Super Estrella has a monopoly on this music, exemplified by the fact that it bought Viva 107.1 and simulcasted on both 107.1 & 97.5 for a while in the beginning of the decade.
Pero sigue ¡La Que Buena!
It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.
Rock en Español is not really my genre, but I listen to it from time to time, mostly because my wife does so. I seem to recall having a better opinion of Viva than I did of Super Estrella and was a bit bummed that it got bought.
One side note that may help Exitos is that it is owned by a Mexican group. Not that said fact makes it inherently better or worse, but anecdotally, my wife regularly tells me that the Mexican Rock en Español/Top 40 stations always play better and more varied music than what we have in L.A.
I also had a more favorable opinion of Viva because to my ears, it had a greater variety of music. Super Estrella took over and I lost interest.
Super Estrella has had to include English-language pop music, so I see it beginning to cede some of its territory to other stations.
This sucks. When I was young, I loved Y-107. I believe they had the #1 Morning show. Then they had to up and change formats. (I will say Estrella is probably the best of the Spanish Radio, but still, annoying)
I moved away from L.A. only to return 4 years ago and have Indie 103 and Free FM taken from me. Honestly, Movin 93 wasn't great, but it was the only music station I'd find myself listening to. Them changing SUCKS. And ya know what, I'm sick of all the stations changing to Spanish AND English Top 40. LA radio is for the spanish speaking AND the idiots of LA. Radio is dead.
