Newly Proposed East Hollywood Bicycle Racks Literally Show Neighborhood's Diversity

Earlier this year, Council President Eric Garcetti's office hosted a bicycle rack competition for artists to design bicycle racks for East Hollywood. Today, after city and community input, Melrose Hills artist Forester Rudolph and his SpokesQuotes design were announced as the winner.

“We asked the community to assist us with designing new bicycle racks that would serve their purpose as a safe place to lock bikes while also beautifying the community. The SpokesQuote design not only meets these goals, it also incorporates the rich cultural heritage of the East Hollywood community,” said Council President Garcetti pointing out proverb inscriptions in either Armenian or Thai with English translations below.

"Bicyclists and pedestrians are rewarded with a drop of cultural wisdom as well as invited to find common themes between the two cultures that share the street, as well as their own," Rudolph wrote in his proposal.

Before two dozen of these are made to dot the streets of Hollywood Boulevard between Western and Vermont, it must pass through some formal processes in the East Hollywood Neighborhood Council and Cultural Affairs Commission.
