Box Office Review: Zac Efron | Champion

Hordes of sexually-confused young girls made Zac Efron and 17 Again this week's box-office champ as it pulled in an impressive $24M. The superb State of Play lagged far behind ($14M), just edging Monsters vs. Aliens ($12.9M/$162.7M), Hannah Montana: The Stupid Movie ($12.6M/$56.1M) and Fast and Furious and Stupid ($12.2M/$136.7M). Crank: High Voltage disappointed in its opening frame ($6.5M) despite the angelic presence of co-star Amy Smart while Observe & Report collapsed in its second weekend ($4M/$18.6M).

The awful Knowing continues to make far too much money ($3.4M/$73.6M). The very funny I Love You, Man added an extra $3.3M ($64.6M) to slip past A Haunting in Connecticut ($3.1M/$51.9M). In a busy weekend for limited releases, American Violet made the most money ($257,000 at $4213 per theater) while Every Little Step was the most profitable ($9075 per). Michael Caine's Is Anybody There? had an okay debut ($7517), but Sleep Dealer ($1672) and The Golden Boys ($840) did virtually no business.
