Earth Day Weekend @ Santa Monica Pier Aquarium
Spend you Sunday celebrating Earth Day and our oceans at Heal the Bay’s Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, where today from 11-6 they will have displays, presentations and activities focusing on environmental issues for which Heal the Bay is advocating will give visitors a range of areas for involvement. If you want to help pitch in, you can sign up for a beach cleanup between noon-3:30 and gain free admission to the museum for your participation. Special exhibits inside the Aquarium will highlight the environmental problems of marine debris. Artist “Deb Ris,” will display samples of her work, composed of trash found in the marine environment, along with many more special presentations and opportunities to interact with marine life. Lots of other kid-friendly activities, too.
Earth Day Whale Fest
At Leo Carrillo State Park in Malibu from 10-4 you can enjoy the sun, sand, and sea at "California’s best beach party"--it's Earth Day Whale Fest. Celebrate the California Gray Whale and their successful return from the brink of extinction. Whale appreciation and environmental awareness are the themes of the day. Bring beach chairs, binoculars & plenty of sunscreen! It's free to hang out, and parking is $10.
Earth Day Expo 2009 @ LA Zoo
The Los Angeles Zoo and K-EARTH 101’s Earth Day Expo 2009, themed Celebrating California Wildlife, features education, conservation and recycling information in an interactive and fun Earth-friendly environment. Today is day two of the two-day event which will include live broadcasts, music, t-shirt tie-dying (shirt brought from home), a free 2009 Earth Day Activity Book and plenty of Earth friendly exhibitors. Learn about some of California’s amazing creatures including harbor seals, California condors (not on exhibit), California brown pelicans, California desert tortoises, Channel Island foxes and bighorn sheep. It's happening at the LA Zoo, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Behold: The Wonder of Reading!
The Wonder of Reading’s annual event Explore-A-Story: A Celebration of Books is taking place today from 11am-3pm at ArcLight Hollywood. It is an incredible day of readings by children’s book authors and illustrators, celebrity readers, performances, arts-and-crafts, movies, and a book fair with book signings…all inspired by great children’s literature. This year’s celebrity readers include: Shia LaBeouf, Jesse McCartney, Jane Kaczmarek, Madison Pettis and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. The event celebrates and supports The Wonder of Reading’s purpose: to inspire in children the love of reading. Since 2004, The Wonder of Reading has played a key role in opening nearly 200 new libraries in public elementary schools in the Los Angeles area, as well as training over 4,000 volunteers to read one-on-one with youngsters each week. More than 130,000 children are enrolled in partner schools and are benefiting from the libraries the Wonder of Reading helped renovate and restock.
Plastic Crochet Workshop
As part of the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project, the Institute For Figuring is making a plastic reef to highlight the problem of plastic buildup in the oceans. You're invited to join them for a plastic crochet workshop. Crocheters at all levels of experience are welcome, from first-time novices to experienced experts. No prior crochet skill is required but if you are skilled you'll pick up the possibilities quickly. Bring plastic bags, video and audio tapes, and come craft a Reef Monster with Christine Wertheim, IFF co-director. From 1-3 p.m. at the Outpost for Contemporary Art (Highland Park). Free!
