MLS' Best Headline Busy Soccer Weekend

This weekend may go down as the first annual Southern California Soccer Weekend due to the breadth of options available to fans. Quite an impressive feat in many ways, especially considering the status of the sport in the U.S. a mere 15 years ago when MLS didn't even exist.

The soccer packed weekend begins with the first annual Fred Walker Cup charity soccer tournament in Santa Ana. Festivities begin this morning at 8 AM and conclude at 4 PM. Shortly after the Fred Walker Cup wraps up, Chivas USA will take the field at the Home Depot Center in Carson.

Chivas USA confronts the surprising expansion club, Seattle Sounders FC. The red-and-whites enter tonight's match with a 3 - 0 - 1 record, their lone tie coming last week in their game against in-stadium rival L.A. Galaxy. Their near perfect record has carried them to the top of the league standings, but the Sounders are right behind them, a mere point behind. A victory will help the red-and-whites solidify their overall lead and give them some breathing room.

Chivas USA, however, will have to do it without one of their most important defensive assets. Midfielder Paulo Nagamura picked up two yellow cards during last week's match and will have to sit out tonight's match due to a mandatory one game suspension. With four defenders also unavailable due to injury, the red-and-white defense will have its hands full trying to contain the dangerous Sounders offense led by midfielder Freddie Ljungberg and forward Freddy Montero. Although the red-and-white defense will be at a disadvantage, the offense will get the opportunity to break in a new Sounders goalie since veteran Sounders 'keeper Kasey Keller's is also serving a red card suspension.

While Chivas USA and Seattle kick off at the Home Depot Center, the Galaxy will simultaneously be doing the same against the San Jose Quakes up in Oakland. The blue-and-gold were fortunate to escape with a tie last week, but although they managed a point, the team is quickly falling behind on the overall league standings. The team desperately needs a victory to get their season on track.

They will be missing defender Gregg Berhalter, also due to a red card ejection which he earned in his MLS debut last week. An unfortunate factor for the Galaxy defense, given his presence was a positive for the blue-and-gold -- up until his ejection. Regardless, the Galaxy have a chance to build on the confidence gained from having fought hard last week to preserve the tie, as well as the strong performance by 'keeper Donovan Ricketts, who won MLS Player of the Week honors after his debut last Saturday.

Only a few hours after both MLS clubs wrap up their respective matches, the Home Depot Center will play host to another match. The women of WPS will take the field at 1 PM on Sunday when 1999 Women's World Cup hero Brandi Chastain and the rest of FC Gold Pride visit to take on Marta and rest of the Los Angeles Sol ladies. The Sol will be attempting to keep their perfect 2 - 0 - 0 record intact and remain atop the league standings.
