Weekend Movie Guide: Serious journalism drama or Efron?

Am I the only one who is really looking forward to seeing State of Play? Surely, Russell Crowe is on the short list of actors whose films we should always see, right? And doesn't Jason Bateman land on that list as well? It's a tad embarrassing to admit, but I'll probably see 17 Again, too, mostly because I will always have a soft spot for Matthew Perry. Same goes for Crank High Voltage which co-stars former crush, Amy Smart. American Violet looks like a perfect little indie: wrongly accused single mom tries to clear her name and starring Will Patton, Alfre Woodard and Tim Blake Nelson. Man alive, do I get a John Sayles vibe from this one!

Much like the brilliant Anvil!, the subject matter of Every Little Step will keep folks away (it's about dancers auditioning for A Chorus Line). If you take a chance on it, though, you will be rewarded with a fine doc. Bill Milner is a child actor that I can get on board with. He stars alongside the great Michael Caine in Is Anybody There?. It's heartwarming, quaint and English. You know if this is your sort of movie. Sleep Dealer is this week's dystopian view of the future. Again, you know if this is your sort of movie. The Butterfly Tattoo looks very intriguing. It's an adaptation of Phillip Pullman's novel about young love gone way wrong.
