THEATRE
Photograph 51 at the Fountain Theatre has been extended until May 31. It’s based on a true story of Rosalind Franklin, a scientist whose research led to the discovery of DNA. But this drama asks whether her male colleagues stole her data and claimed credit for themselves. It’s a play about science, competition and a woman trapped in a man’s world. Tonight, Rosalind Franklin Jekowsky, niece and namesake of the British biophysicist whose famous photo led to the discovery of the structure of DNA, will lead a Talk Back discussion following the performance. The show begins at 8 pm tonight.
ART+BIKES
It's Bike Night at the Hammer Museum. Ride over for a bike-centric evening of food, fun, and film, which includes free museum admission, a screening of Breaking Away, a performance by Telematique, and veggie snacks, drinks, and free bike valet parking by the LA County Bike Coalition. While everything's free, you still need to get a ticket for the screening, available at the Billy Wilder Theater Box Office starting at 7:30 pm. Limit one ticket per person on a first come, first served basis. The bike valet in the courtyard is free, and if you must drive, then car parking is available for $3 after 6 pm under the museum.
THEATRE*
How much would you pay for a painting with nothing on it? And if you did happen to buy it, would your friends think you a fool? That’s the premise of the comedy Art that runs this weekend at the Skirball. Starring Bob Balaban, Brian Cox and Jeff Perry, Art is a Los Angeles Theatre Works production, so all performances will be recorded to air on the national radio theater series The Play’s the Thing. (It’s broadcast weekly here on KPCC.) Tonight’s performance begins at 8 pm, and Art runs through Sunday at various times. Tickets are $20-$48.
SELF-DEFENSE
We included this event because it’s a little random. Assistant Majority Leader Paul Krekorian is hosting a free self-defense workshop for women today in Glendale. It’s part of a series of workshops Krekorian is holding to raise awareness for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The workshops will be led by Nelson Nio, who’ll focus on close-range fighting, specifically designed for women to combat sexual assault. Tonight’s class will be held from 6-7 pm at the Glendale Police Department Community Room. There will be other workshops in Los Feliz, North Hollywood, Burbank next month. Maybe Krekorian can also help with the rape kit backlog, too?
FILM
AFI is hosting a screening of the documentary The Garden at the ArcLight Hollywood tonight at 8 pm. The film focuses on the political, social and economic battle over the largest community garden in the U.S. -- that happens to be located in the heart of South Los Angeles. The Garden features appearances by Danny Glover, Willie Nelson, Joan Baez, Daryl Hannah, Dennis Kucinich and Zak de la Rocha. A Q&A with director Scott Hamilton Kennedy will immediately follow the screening.

“Three Feet from Gold,” a mixed media group show opens tonight at Ghettogloss with the reception from 7 pm to midnight (which will include a gold-dusted drink). Expect “gold nuggets, treasure maps, peepholes and bears, Plus Handmade books, glitter, collage & more...”
