Downtown is Booming, but Where is the Trader Joe's?

downtownsurvey.png "Downtown has become a really hot place to play. I thought I would never live to see the day, but as this downturn continues we are seeing more restaurants open, more nightclubs open, and they are doing just fine, thank you very much." That's Carol Schatz, head of the Downtown Center Business Improvement District (DCBID), speaking yesterday about the latest survey about downtown. Because census data focuses on residents and not workers and visitors and the last since the last census was in 2000, before the growth boom began, this survey tracked a variety of people, reported blogdowntown. "We want to be able to use this data to attract more business, and in particular retail to serve our growing residential population and ... our existing employee population," Schatz said. Now, if only they could get a Trader Joes.

I love all this downtown booming talk, but I like here and still have to drive way out to get to reasonably priced groceries (sorry Ralphs), a Target, decent bookstore or neighborhood coffee shop. Wasn't that Orsini development supposed to be mixed-use? All of their retail space is completely vacant.

There are lots of coffee shops, no? blogdowntown has done a wonderful guide to WiFi coffeeshops, too (thanks, Eric and Ed!)

trader joe's in downtown would be amazing. i would love to see a trader joe's in any part of the east side of los angeles too. only in my dreams. :*(

omg...I would trade my kidneys for a Trader Joes in Downtown.

Trader Joe's would have done very well to open up a store before Ralphs opened. Imagine all the goodwill they would have gotten-plus they'd be serving not only the Downtown residents, but the ~400,000 Downtown workers and all the surrounding neighborhoods.

And Ralphs still sucks.

Downtown is booming because the city is gradually going through the process of ridding the are of homeless individuals and mid-west hipsters are enjoying their working vacations in trendy lofts. This town is changing for the worst; Charles Bukowski is flipping in his fucking grave.
