Hundreds Protest in Glendale over Taxes

As President Barack Obama announced plans to overhaul the tax code in order to make it a simpler process to deal with, protests spread across the country today with anti-tax tea parties of sorts. A few hundred reportedly protested in Glendale this afternoon and more events are planned for the Santa Monica Pier and the Van Nuys Civic Center. Down in Orange County, around 1,000 people are protesting outside a courthouse in Santa Ana.

"The president's opponents have been looking for a way to grab the public's attention as to their objections to the Obama agenda," said Dan Schnur, the director of USC's Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics, to the Daily News. "The fact that we're talking about this means they're making some progress."

A complete list of today's protests in California can be found here.

Yea those are cracking me up.

Faux News, Hannity, and Beck are all trying to present this as grassroots activizim when it's actually Republican Party Astroturf.

Let me guess JRB, you thought it was PATRIOTIC when the 100 or so protested in front of Bush's Crawford ranch protesting the Iraq war. But you, and the "real" news on MSNBC, think protesting historically reckless government spending is crazy and unpatriotic?

JRB THE PROBLEM IN THE USA IS YOU & PEOPLE LIKE YOU!

When Laura Bush sent staff out with cold refreshments in the summer heat of Crawford, was she putting down the protesters?
When Bush not once, or his staff, said one bad thing about protesters, were they putting them down?

The FAUX news, as you say, has been reporting today on what people feel. Yes, the Homeland Security of Obama may call the protesters possible domestic terrorists, but the Code Pinksters and the Moveoners were never labeled as such.

You JRB, who believes it's your way or the highway, who puts down anyone who disagrees with you, who is filled with hate, and cannot for one second stop to try and understand why people disagree and how to BUILD team, is the problem.

You have put me down almost all the time, even though in truth we probably agree on a lot of things.

People like you, filled with your hate, elect the Nancy Pelosis and the Eric Cantor types who are party loyalists, and not loyal to their nations.

JRB, in case you can't tell, I'm tired of your BS and the BS of people like you, on the right and left. I may not be in the majority, but then again I read a lot of newspapers, magazines, and actually read laws passed and proposed and don't wait for Olbermann or Hannity or worst the Daily Show.

Oh please Trojie! People like me havn't been in charge for the last eight years.

As far as hate? No. This is anger, and you folks have earned it!

People like you have been in charge the last 8 years, 16 years, 30 years.
Spend, Spend, Spend, and then if that's not enough SPEND MORE.

I responded to another post you had about me not going to the protests because it's a waste. The issue is spending not taxing.

Obama's stimulus is not targeted, its just a hose.

With his stimulus, with TARP that has failed (COB now estimates Treasury will get 66 cents for every dollar), with the mortgage bailouts, and yet to come auto bailouts, the deficit will HUGE and taxes will have to be increased to pay for all of this.

Republicans spent without having money. Democrats spend without having any money.

What's the difference?

You keep making it republican vs. democrats. Its you against congress. us against congress. Has been for the last 28 years and will be unless people starting holding them accountable. Not the parties, the elected officials.

Look at Howard Berman, he had his ass handed to him for a $200K earmark for something worthwhile, but he's now not asking for any earmarks for next year.
I'm not saying they need to be replaced, they just need to be held accountable.

"People like you have been in charge the last 8 years, 16 years, 30 years."

I didn't vote for Bush.

"Spend, Spend, Spend, and then if that's not enough SPEND MORE."

Like $846,549,961,292 spent on wars that were totally unnecesary since 2001? That sure wasn't "people like me". We were out there protesting that shit.

You keep solidifying my point that it's people like you are that are the problem.
you didn't vote for Bush or the war, but I'm sure you were a war protester foaming at the mouth with Bush dressed as Hitler and you and the MSNBC media type thought you were doing your civic duty.
It doesn't matter if you voted for Bush or not, he was your POTUS. It doesn't matter if I voted for Obama or not (I voted for Barr) he's my POTUS. Bush increased spending recklessly, and Obama has vowed to double the spending. One for war in foreign lands just or not, one for war on our economy.

To me it's no different.

A deficit is a deficit is a deficit. but you keep believing FNC and the republicans are the problem, and ignoring the same fallacies that the Olbermanss, Maddows, and NY Times and dailykos posses. You like them because they reinforce your beliefs.

There's no difference between you and someone who watches Hannity.
Whether you're a right wing extremist or a left wing extremist, you're still an extremist. You still refuse to understand that most of the country doesn't agree with you still you refuse to find a compromise.

JRB you may have not wanted a war in Iraq or Afghanistan, instead you and your extremist (right or left) elk have waged a war in America for over 35 years.

you want class war to get equality for all in income. the right has been at war to convert everyone into some super moral people.

"you didn't vote for Bush or the war, but I'm sure you were a war protester foaming at the mouth with Bush dressed as Hitler..."

No actually I was with the poltical satire group called "The Billionaires for Bush".

We carried signs like;

Four more wars!
More Blood for Oil!
Free Ken Lay!

You know smart assed humor. Much more effective than anger for getting you point across.

It fascinates me that after eight years of the bush administration, immense wasteful spending, corruption, expensive and unnecessary wars, and the largest transfer of peoples' $$ to private banks in american history, conservatives are the ones out protesting on tax day.

In other news, the turnout for this top-down (not grassroots) series of events around the nation is extremely low.

And Bush dismissed 10million anti-war protestors as a "focus group". I wonder how these 100,000 MAX around the nation will be regarded. FOXnews has dedicated 100% news space and organizing space to the events.

Point me to a link of Bush's comments on protesters.

His WH press staff never put them down or said anything negative. Their official policy was NO COMMENT.

And Anti Bush protesters were vile, violent and well funded by organization like MOVEON!!!

my other posts counter the other BS you write.

At first glance, my dyslexia kicked in: I read it as "Hundreds Protest in Glendale over Texas".... which would have made more sense, somehow...

http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/04/freedomworks-finally-gets-around-to-it.php

It's probably fair to assume that back in 1773, the word "teabagging" didn't make everyone--from immature bloggers to perfectly mature mainstream media types--giggle like school children. But even still the would-be founding fathers took the appropriate precautionary measures, and dumped tons of loose tea (not tons of tea bags) into the Boston Harbor.

Unfortunately, it took today's tea party protesters almost two months to get the memo. I mean, an actual memo:

The term "teabagging" has strong sexual connotations. Be wary of anyone with a camera asking you if you are a "teabagger" or if you enjoy "teabagging" or similar leading questions - they are trying to make a fool of you.

Speaking for myself, I've had to cut back hours at work because things are slow. However my net pay is almost the same because the Fed is taking less out.

So either all these people who turned out are making more than $250K a year or this is a well organised false outrage aimed at The Obama Administration.

Guess which one I think is the case.

Yes, an organized false outrage at the obama administration, i mean, the neo-fascist hitler-like administration (see this short video from CNN: http://is.gd/sDZS).

And you know, signs like: "The American Taxpayers Are The Jews For Obama's Ovens" http://bit.ly/3LytNF.

Because anti-war protests never ever contain lone crackpots carrying inappropriate signage.

http://washingtonindependent.com/38902/joe-the-plumber-at-michigan-tea-party-saying-in-god-we-trust-will-get-you-shot-in-some-places

Thousands of people descended on the Michigan Capitol earlier today as part of a national movement of “tea parties” to protest high taxes and what they argue is an encroachment of socialism into American government and society.

Addressing the rally was Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, commonly known as “Joe the Plumber” ...

“Let me give you another extremist view, ‘In God We Trust,’” he said to wild applause. “Say that too loud in some parts of America and you will be shot. It’s terrible.”

So if these protests are merely "Republican Party Astroturf", then please explain why the Sacramento crowd booed CA GOP chair Ron Nehring and Gov. Schwarzenegger for their nudging of Prop 1A's proposed 16 billion dollar tax hike.

You'd think all of those silly conservative cranks would know that doesn’t fit the DHS' narrative of right-wing extremism.

Oh, and BTW....most conservatives are none too happy about the GOP's attempts at hitching their funding wagons to today's events. As far as we're concerned, they can all go piss up a rope. They, along with the Democratic controlled Congress, helped to get us all into this mess.

But no matter...apparently, most of you are perfectly happy with the job our government is doing and have absolutely no problem rewarding failure with your hard-earned tax dollars.

Seriously, who do we think we are staging protests to show our displeasure over years upon years of wasteful government spending?

I mean after all, isn't paying higher taxes patriotic?

I think you make a valid observation. In the same token, I also think there are a far lesser number of folks that share your same view point than what you might think. You acknowledge that this wasn't a problem that was exclusively created by any one party. I strongly agree with that.

Unfortunately, many (not all) of your cohorts supporting the protests were exclusively directing their anger at Obama and the Democrats. That's contrary to your point, and mine.

I know (and regularly chat with) folks from both sides, and find it funny that when I would make comments about the amount of $ the war in Iraq was costing us and that it could bankrupt us, people on the "right" tended to dismiss my comments as non-sense and me being "another anti-war idiot," when in reality, my opposition to the war (which I consider a major factor to all of this) had nothing to do with my politics. Now many of those same people all of the sudden had an "awakening" (at least 5 years late if you ask me) and are trying to lay the blame on only one side.

Arnie got booed?!?!?!

I shocked!

I find it hard to believe that the pubie party faithful would boo a pro choice, pro gay marriage, RINO, who just did a 180 on his last distiguishing Republican feature. Taxes! (that's sarcasim BTW)

And if this isn't all manufactured outrage by the RNC, how is it that Joe the, (i'm not really a), plumber, suddenly shows up? Gimme a break! This is all as staged as JTP's first appearance where he pointedly made statements that fell just short of accusing Obama of being a Communist.

Tax outrage is all you guys have left. Well guess what? Most people are more worried about whether they'll even have a paycheck to pay taxes out of, so your whole effort here is a total failure.

Try again boys and girls. Even dusting off the rotting corpse of Ronald Reagan and marching him around this last election didn't help you much.

Back to the drawing board!

And if this isn't all manufactured outrage by the RNC, how is it that Joe the, (i'm not really a), plumber, suddenly shows up?

Joe Wurzelbacher is a member of the GOP leadership? Huh...news to me.

I could've sworn that he was a private citizen.

Perhaps, like you, he read blogs and decided to show up and lend his support.

The fact that an organization headed by Dick Armey is claiming to be the ringleader of these "tea parties" is beyond ironic. The man who was the poster child for deregulating everything in sight when he was in Congress, including most of the "oversight" that existed for the banking industry and Wall Street is now protesting the current economic situation? Gee, golly, wonder how we wound up in this mess, Dick. Maybe only hundreds showed up because most conservatives realized the hypocrisy in waiting until NOW to protest government spending. For 6 of the 8 Bush years when the GOP controlled Congress it couldn't move fast enough to rubber-stamp the spending proposals from that bunch of fatcats. Mr. Armey, truly, you are a Dick.

So it was ok when Moveon.org a fringe liberal group led by the foreign currency destroyer George Soros coordinated protests?

But I could see how you would believe the tea party is a fringe and crazy group. Here's a link to NY Times article on protesters organized by MOVEON: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/18/politics/18crawford.html?sq=moveon.org%20protest&st=nyt&scp=1&pagewanted=print

On the other hand, todays ny times offers vague coverage on the protests yesterday and believes they were put on by FNC and other conservative media groups. FNC and conservative media may have promoted them but they didn't coordinate them like MoveOn did.

AND, Bush's homeland security NEVER labeled Moveon and other left fringe groups as possible domestic terrorists as Obama's homeland security secretary just did.

If Obama came out today and said too much govt spending is bad, and admitted his proposals will lead to major tax increases in the future and that he will cut spending, a lot of people would praise him.
So even if Armey and other republicans spent a lot, they got a lot of flack from people like me before, if they admit they are wrong and work to solve the problem... then what's your point?
Sen Byrd of WV was a KKK leader now he's well known for leading civil rights for the Dems in the senate. People can change when they see the light and educate themselves.

On the other hand, todays ny times offers vague coverage on the protests yesterday and believes they were put on by FNC and other conservative media groups.

You mean like all of those hispanic and liberal media groups who assisted in supporting and arranging all of those immigration protests?

Shocking!

"Joe Wurzelbacher is a member of the GOP leadership? Huh...news to me. I could've sworn that he was a private citizen."

Oh I wouldn't say part of the GOP leadership, but he was certainly snatched up as a symbol by John McCain and flown around the country to appear at McCain's speeches and rallies.

So did Joe do all this at Joe's own expense?

And who ran Joe's beloved plumbing business while he was out galavanting around the country, on the stump with Palin and McCain?

My guess is he was paid to do all that, which would make him an employee of the GOP. Hardly a regular citizen.
