STYLEist: Upscale Mens Vintage Spotted on the Streets

Going down Hollywood Blvd., it was hard not to miss this stylish man as he walked down the street. Turns out, he was named as one of Esquire Magazine's Best Dressed Real Men in America a few years ago. Meet Jonathan Kanarek, the owner of men's clothing store Jake Vintage in Hollywood.

From the hip and trendy to the fashionably bizarre STYLEist uncovers the raw couture found on the streets of Los Angeles.

That suit doesn't fit him. Points for cuffs, tie bar, ambitious pocket square, etc -- but his suit is way too big.

Kudos! Jake vintage is a great store with an excellent, hand-picked collection. Stock up on Pendletons here. Jonathan absolutely knows his stuff and will go out of his way to make sure you look great! By far my favorite store, always something interesting to look at.

Caleb. "Skinny Fit" was not always in style. Hence this being actual vintage and not retro vintage.

I understand, and I realize boxier fits were more common back then, but I think his suit looks a bit bulky -- something not fixed with microwaving down to "skinny fit."

I too think the suit is a bit big, and the sleeves about 1/2" too long. But I biggest beef is how the (messy) pocket square and tie don't go together. Bleh.

I do like the suit's fabric and, like Caleb, give bonus points for the effort. I like the sideburns, but not the comb-over. I love the shoes. It's a win, but not a shutout.

As for sleeves too long, that is just insanity. Look at how much shirt cuff we see already!

As for the overall fit - it is far from terrible. It may look woefully outdated to a generation raised on the Hedi Slimane diet - but it is not "too big". You might call it a "full cut" but that's a matter of stylistic preference.

To the modern eye, I suspect that the relaxed waist is the most jarring feature of the jacket. This is intentional, notice the lack of shaping darts on the front. You may have heard of the term "sack suit". This describes a vintage Brooks Brothers-style suit with an undarted jacket and a shoulder a bit softer than the one we see here.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I did mean the sleeves of the shirt are a little long. And I still think the suit is a bit big, though not horribly so. Both pale to the pocket square/tie problem.

I was just thinking the other day that I wanted to see a new STYLEist post. Thanks!
