TV Junkie: Bad HBO, No Donut; The Streamys on Sat.; Gaffigan on Sun.

"Jim Gaffigan: King Baby" airs on Sunday @ 9pm on Comedy Central
The Internet is abuzz today with promotion of HBO's "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" to air this Sunday. Some writer's are pointing out that the show doesn't address any of the problems going on in Africa these days (AIDS, war, famine, rape, pillaging of natural resource) - instead it depicts a laid-back and idyllic place with only quaint soap opera-esque concerns.

Even NPR jumped on the bandwagon this morning, chatting up the author and director but not addressing the most glaring fact that this milquetoast program is not a valid substitute for HBO's normally excellent Sunday lineups. The program has no business being on HBO - it's no "True Blood", "Sopranos", "Big Love", etc. We tune in Sunday's for something gripping that usually has a bit of sex, violence, and humor, but this show has none of those qualities/attributes. Viewers are shelling out a premium subscription for something more than endless replayings of "White Men Can't Jump".

At least this Sunday we have the broadcast premiere of Jim Gaffigan's new special, "Jim Gaffigan: King Baby", on Comedy Central @ 9pm.

This weekend will also feature The Streamy Awards, available, of course, via webcast on Saturday at 7:30pm. Lots of regular TV folks will be there, including Lisa Kudrow who has been nominated for best actress for her work in the web show “Web Therapy”. Check out the full list of nominees.

News From Renewaland: NBC's "Chopping Block" will not make the journey to Renewaland. The peacock thinks that reruns of "Law and Order" will perform better.

The TV Junkie Plan: Tonight - Bill Maher, "Terminator", "Mistresses", "Supernews", "The Soup", Leno, Fallon. Saturday - "The Streamys", "Kids' Choice Awards", "Talkshow with Spike Feresten". Sunday - "Storm Stories", Jim Gaffigan, "Breaking Bad"

That's right, No. 1 Detectives will be no "True Blood." Can't wait for it to come back in July!

Ooh, Zach, I second you on "True Blood"!

And while I see the critical point about "No. 1 Detectives," I also think that it is useful for an American audience to see that not all African countries are engaged in civil strife and that there is something relatable to "normal everyday life" in some -- maybe few-- places there. A lot of Americans think of Africa as either jungle or corruption or war or poverty or all four -- they need a sense of the complexity of an entire continent.

Right, next you'll tell me movies about Colombia that do not focus solely on the drug trade are realistic too.

Do the producers of the "Ladies" series get no slack, the program being based on a series of detective novels?
