Pencil This In: Art Deco and Cocktails, Captured Aural Phantasy Theater

Join the Art Deco Society for Cocktails in Historic Places™ -- a learning session and happy hour all wrapped in history. Tonight’s adventure will be held from 6-8 pm at The Kress on Hollywood Boulevard. “Built in 1934 by architect Stephen Burrell as the S.H. Kress Department Store, Angelenos are more likely to remember this soaring Art Deco beauty from its more lurid incarnation as the flaming purple flagship Frederick's of Hollywood boutique.” Deco attire is welcome, but not necessary. If you arrive promptly at 6 pm, there will be a brief tour of the location.

Keeping with the retro theme, tonight and tomorrow night at the Alexandria Hotel, Park Avenue Produce presents Captured Aural Phantasy Theater -- an old-time variety show that harkens back to the heyday of old Hollywood. Captured Aural Phantasy Theater is a live show built around radio show-style readings of mid-century comic book stories. The evening also includes art, short multimedia acts, prizes, live music from the house band The Noble Gasses. This weekend’s special guest, btw, is screen legend Tallulah Bankhead, on a two-day pass from the big backlot in the sky. The show begins at 8 pm and tickets are $10.

MUSIC TALK
Tonight the GRAMMY Museum hosts reggae artist and son of Bob, Damian Marley, and hip-hop superstar Nas for an onstage interview and performance. The two artists will be interviewed by Museum Executive Director Robert Santelli about their upcoming musical project, humanitarian work and careers. After the interview, Nas and Marley will take questions from the audience and perform a few stripped-down songs. The event begins at 8 pm with doors at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $19.95 ($17.95 for members).
