The Official Recession has enveloped us for fifteen official months. It’s still no reason we can’t enjoy life. This is LA -- we have a ton of inexpensive options! A Recession Obsession is somewhere fantastic, whether times are good or not, because it's that damn good. We last obsessed on some Salvadorean pupusas and no-cook, take-home Korean food. Today, we...
Los Angeles’ unemployment rate has grown ugly (see what ugly looks like.) I recently heard someone say “keeping your job is the new promotion.” I believe it. As our fears rise, and bank balances shrink, we must maintain careful watch of our food budgets. The good news is, thanks to a scattering of panaderias around Los Angeles, we don’t need to wave goodbye to desert.
Mexican pastries, housed at panaderias (bread stores,) are large, sweet and inexpensive. A taste of this trifecta will rarely cost north of $1. That’s why panaderias are LAist’s latest Recession Obesssion.
Peter Panaderias
Panaderias house a variety of doughy sweets. Cookies, cream-filled pastries, jelly-filled pastries, sweet pan dulce, cakes, muffins and more. Find a favorite. There's a nice range to explore. Sometimes Mexican pastries can be heavy on the dough, light on the flavor. While I warn you, fear not. This gamble is cheaper than a trip to the Commerce Casino.
For Fun: If you want to be the most popular person at a party bring $5 worth of goods from the panaderia. The large bag of sweet surprises will have your peers thinking you spent much more than a fiver.

when i lived in orange county, i used to go to the one in santa ana all the time. great tortas, aguas frescas and definitely try out their pan dulce!
I don't have a favorite panaderia, but the "hole-in-the-wall" mom & pop places are usually the best! If you get super desperate, you could always walk into a Vallarta and grab some.
I have a favorite:
DOS Aguilas Bakery

Los Angeles, CA 90022

As far as I can tell, it's mom & pop, and has been there for years.
You already mentioned my fav, La Adelita at Grand Central Mkt.
I stumbled onto a Mom and Pop Panaderia at Third and Vermont. They sell a sort of bread pudding with a carmel glaze on top, cut into squares like corn bread. I'm not sure if this is actually a traditional pan dulce, or something the owner came up with. I haven't seen them anywhere else, but they sure are gooood.
You're probably talking about capirotada, typically served only during Lent.
I gave up capirotada for Lent. Oops.
Thanks! Now I can ask for them, instead of just point.
Oh and here's a local artist who makes pillows, backpacks, coin purses, etc. made to look like pan dulces.
I met this guy at a flea market.
Check these out...

Oh yea!
As soon as I feel secure enough about my job that I'm not holding a month's rent in the bank, I plan to buy some of those cool wrester mask t-shirts.
That is too funny! Nice.
BTW, ain't no way I'm sharing my favorite spots! Jejeje La suerte que tiene uno de ser mexicano.
