Old Seal (Left), New Seal (Right)
"States like New Mexico and municipalities throughout the country have crosses on their seals, so it would not violate the Constitution because it represents a historical fact," Antonovich said, via the Daily News. "I don't know when it will happen, but whether it happens this year, next year or five years from now, I know it will reflect the historical significance of the county."
That historical significance is the fact that the mission's location is the site where what became LA County was founded in 1771 by Spanish missionaries, according to the paper.
County board meetings don't bring out the public in droves too often, but his issue certainly packed the room a few years ago. Get ready for a religulous battle.

Aren't there more important issue going on in the 5th district than this seal? Right when I think LA County is sort of progressing, issues like this come up. Boo. :(
Hear hear!
And better things to spend $700,000 on, (prolly $1,000,000 or more in 2009-2010 dollars).
Really though. Like we aren't already in enough of a financial bind, lets spend more money we don't have on something that doesn't need to be changed.
I'm not Christian, but I can accept that Christian missionaries are very important in the city's history. That's an indisputable fact that should be represented on a seal.
Isn't that a mission building in the place of the crosses on the new seal?
