San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has his eye on a big prize: Governor of California. With the 2010 election in the seedling stage, Newsom is aiming to raise his profile in Southern California, and has set his sights on the youth vote and the liberal leanings of Los Angeles for his local visit this week, explains the LA Times.
Newsom first endured a radio interview with KIIS-FM's Ryan Seacrest yesterday morning (Seacrest went for the hard questions: "What is that product that you put in your slick, shiny hair?" then dubbed the SF Mayor "a metrosexual"). He also professed his love for Twitter, but confessed he wouldn't tweet about Seacrest because his problem with the popular status update service was that he was a lousy speller; a shame, really, because the Twitterverse is rather smitten with Newsom.
After a whirlwind day of media, Newsom went to Santa Monica, where he seemed at ease talking about local hot topics like plastic bag bans and same sex marriage; he also referred to himself as "that crazy mayor who planted a vegetable garden in front of City Hall." Tweet that!
Oh, wait...you did! Twitter has been a-flutter with Newsom devotees. In addition to a smattering of gubernatorial Tweet-endorsements, there's the occasional "Gavin Newsom for President 2016" along with plenty of more risque ones about his, err, appeal. One Tweeter sums up his take on the SF Mayor's visit to SaMo last night: "Gavin Newsom was awesome tonight. I love this man. He's offically my new man-crush." Seacrest, out.

A new California statewide poll has some interesting news on an upcoming 2010 Democratic gubernatorial primary: both San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and state Attorney General Jerry Brown handily beat possible GOP gubernatorial challengers Steve Poizner, the state insurance commissioner, and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman in head-to-head contests.
In a head-to-head against GOPers, Brown beats Whitman 43-27, and Poizer by a smaller margin, 41-30.
But Newsom, who's never run a statewide race, also beats Whitman by a healthy 40-25 percent margin, and beats Poizner 38-29 percent.
As a SF transplant, I'm completely in support of Newsom. I'm so sad that I missed his town hall last night, and only wish I could make it to SD for tonight's.
