On Wednesday, Barack Obama will make his Southern California debut as President of the United States. After arriving at Long Beach Airport in the afternoon, he'll hold a 4 p.m. town hall meeting in Costa Mesa followed by a tour of the Edison International Vehicle Electrics Plant in Pomona on Thursday.

The only event open to the public is the town hall. Beginning at 10:00 AM Tuesday, March 17, free "tickets will be limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis," according to a White House media advisory sent to LAist. The ticket pickup location is at the OC Fair and Event Center in Costa Mesa (Enter at Gate 1 or Gate 10; Park in Lot A). "For security reasons, do not bring bags and limit personal items," the White House warns of the Wednesday event. "No signs or banners permitted. The OC Fairgrounds will be charging $5/car for on-site parking."

Also: Obama will tape a segment on The Tonight Show at some point during his visit, notes Kevin Roderick.

Update: There also be a Los Angeles town hall, more info here.

Its a shame he hasn't come sooner to California post election. He was elected because of California volunteers. In CA we made over 50% of all calls made on behalf of his campaign. Our volunteers were the best in the country, the most devoted and the most in real numbers.

Did you notice election night the news agencies were calling the election for Obama as if California's electoral votes were in the bag for him?

I loved it!!

Maybe the President can explain why, after enjoying so much support from Latinos in the election, he is now indicating that he does not care about immigration. Through AG Holder, he offered the position of Civil Rights Division head to Los Angeles lawyer, Thomas Saenz (a Yale Law grad who, among other things, helped defeat the anti-immigrant Prop. 187), only to revoke it last Thursday on political grounds, claiming that Saenz's work on behalf of immigrants was a political liability. So much for returning the Civil Rights Division to its position as "the conscience of the Justice Department." The Latino community was under the impression that Obama understood that immigration is an important issue. Good thing for Thurgood Marshall (who also took a lot of heat because of his work on behalf of unpopular clients) that Kennedy and Johnson actually had the courage Obama claims to have.

Not to make this a political discussion but the immigration policy is most likely on the back burner for a moment from a combination of economic woes and illegal and legal immigrants returning to their home countries because of the same referenced issue.
