The Latest from the Wildflower Hotline: Flowers Spotted in Downtown

It's Friday, so that means more updates from the Thomas Payne Foundation in their weekly Wildflower Hotline update. Here's what's going on in the immediate area:

Downtown Los Angeles is even sporting some natives, just check out the Cornfields area, near the Los Angeles River. This park features a great display of Lupinus sp. (lupines), Layia platyglossa (tidy tips), a bit of Eschscholzia californica (California poppy), and more. This park is just next to the Chinatown station on the Gold Line train, and you can walk to and around the flowers between 8am and sunset.

In the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, east of the 101 FWY, off Potrero Rd., head to Rancho Sierra Vista, and look for Dodecatheon clevelandii (shooting star), Castilleja affinis (Indian paintbrush), and Viola pedunculata (Johnny jump-up).

Of course, there's a lot more going on if you're willing to travel a little further out. The whole report includes the South Coast Botanic Garden, Angeles Crest and Angeles Forest, San Bernardino National Forest and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
