Cheer for history, Yay! This is a photo from Venice back in the day | Photo from lavocado@sbcglobal.net via Flickr
From the Malibu Lagoon Museum/Adamson House or the Echo Park Historical Society, the Los Angeles region is chock full of small non profit historical societies archiving our history and educating the public. The problem is, they have few resources and little time and money to do outreach with. To help solve that problem, a coalition of historical groups are pulling their resources together for one big event at the Heritage Square Museum (near the Gold Line) on March 22nd called L.A. Heritage Day (it's $5, but free if you bring this flyer)
"For an area widely misperceived as having no 'real' history, the Los Angeles region has more than 200 historical organizations, societies, and museums dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich and varied pasts of various regions, industries, and individuals," the Los Angeles Heritage Alliance writes on their blog. "The L.A. Heritage Alliance is a network of these groups formed in 2008 to unify and leverage their efforts."
This looks like the ultimate Los Angeles event for us to get our geek on. Here's a list of who is confirmed so far with some more expected to be added. We're excited, are you?
And check out LAist's history series, LAistory (below the jump):
Val Verde; Thelma Todd's Roadside Cafe; An eclectic house in Beverly Hills; Echo Park's Bonnie Brae House; Marineland of the Pacific; Grand Central Air Terminal; LA's Own Wrigley Field; How LA got its name; The wreck of the Dominator; The 1925 "Hollywood Subway."; The Pink Lady of Malibu; Lions Drag Strip; Disneyland...when it was cheap to get in; The ugliest building in the city; Union Station; Union Station's Fred Harvey Room; A Smelly Mystery at another train station; The Egyptian Theatre; Pilgrimage Bridge; The "It" Girl, Clara Bow; Elias J. Now this is MY kind of event!
Los Angeles is AWASH in history and historical sites. If you doubt this...visit, as a start, the LA Conservancy's website under "Preservation Resources/Preservation Organizations & Historical Societies"; the "bigorangelandmarks" blogspot; and USC's "LA as Subject" site. Another interesting one is the "You-Are-Here".com site of lA buildings, murals and public art, maintained by a German man named Martin who lives in Stuttgart but visits LA frequently: a Google search under "Historic Buildings Los Angeles Photo Gallery" will bring it up.
Check out the L.A. Heritage Alliance Facebook page to stay in touch with L.A. Heritage related information.
Thank you for the L.A. Conservancy shout out DeMille1913! For any of you interested in current and past preservation issues in L.A., check out the Conservancy's issues page: http://laconservancy.org/issues/issues_main.php4.
L.A. Heritage Day is a great opportunity to prove that L.A. does have history, so bring all you non-believing friends and family out to the event next Sunday, March 22.
Hah - awesome photo.
It would be nice if the LA County Historical Society had a permanent home, though.
Get our geek on? Do we ever do anything else?
This may or may not already be on the Militant's calendar!
I've never seen such a wide range of heritage groups come together - seriously. This'll be something to see. And it's free!
Re: post #6 above:
Man, I just had this awesome vision in my head of "The Los Angeles Historical Museum." How amazing could that be???
