Let's Get More Community Gardens in LA

Blogger Tasha Nita Adams at Blackburn & Sweetzer (that's a street intersection, by the way), has many dreams, but this urban one in particular: "taking these empty lots around the neighborhood (there are two, I believe, on Blackburn alone) and making them into green spaces. Mini dog parks. Community gardens. Perhaps a playground. Or wild flowers and benches. Someplace to read or ponder. It’s a thought."

Now she's happened upon the City of West Hollywood's sole community garden at 417 Norwich. She speaks of former West Hollywood Councilman and Assemblyman Paul Koretz, who is currently running for the 5th district where she lives (he faces David Vehedi). He "really hung his hat on what he did to create such a stellar city as West Hollywood," she wrote hoping that if he wins the seat in the May 19th election, community gardens can come to her neighborhood.

However, considering the recession, the time to do community gardens may be now, CurbedLA notes. With all the vacant lots in Flint, Michican, "urban agriculturists," are filling the void. Here in Los Angeles, a group of community members are starting a garden on Fountain and we have a handful of guerilla gardeners who KCET's SoCal Connected did a feature on last November (watch the video below)
