What Are The Surveillance Cameras Doing on Skid Row?

Tonight's monthly Skid Row neighorhood watch walk will include a trip to the LAPD Central City Division Police Station for a look at just how the district is using these cameras to reduce crime and increase safety in the area. In 2006, the Central City East Association's Downtown Industrial Business Improvement District installed the cameras.

The ten cameras have assisted police in reducing crime and in identifying criminal suspects. The system uses fully controlled pan/tilt/zoom cameras to provide real-time images. LAPD’s efforts are multiplied without adding more personnel. Surveillance cameras have dramatically improved law enforcement efforts to reduce criminal activities, including narcotics sales, robberies, burglaries and prostitution.

Councilwoman Jan Perry and LAPD Captain Blake Chow will give a presentation about the impact of this "virtual policing" and will allow people to check out the monitoring room inside the station. Show up with your questions.

The walk meets at the Midnight Mission at 6pm and then they will depart for the station. (If it's pouring head straight to the station).
