Pencil This In: Scott Walker on Film, LAist Shutterbugs @ Where
FILM*
The NuArt begins a one-week engagement of Stephen Kijak’s film Scott Walker: 30 Century Man. It’s a portrait of the enigmatic musician who’s been described as the best-kept secret in modern music. David Bowie is an executive producer of the biopic, and he along with Radiohead, Brian Eno, Damon Albarn, Alison Goldfrapp, Johnny Marr and others are interviewed about Scott Walker and his music. There’s an opening night cocktail party tonight, too, at Liquid Kitty. They’ll have $2 drink specials with your ticket stub.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Two of LAist’s music photogs -- Koga and Benjamin Hoste (along with Simon Cardoza) -- are exhibiting their work in “Exposure: A Photography Show” in Silverlake tonight and the following three Fridays at Where Gallery. Come early (7:30-9 pm) to mingle and meet the photographers, and stay late (until midnight) to hear some of the best bands (unplugged) and DJs on the Silverlake scene. Bands on tap tonight: Le Switch, Manhattan Murder Mystery and a special guest. There’s a $5 cover after 8:45 pm.
MORE FILM
Today marks the start of a 10-day SoCal celebration of the work of Japanese filmmaker and artist Takahiko Iimura. Tonight at 7:30 pm, Iimura will make an appearance at the UCLA Film & Television Archive at the Billy Wilder Theater (Hammer Museum) along with a screening of his seven “Film Poems” from the 1960s-70s. Tickets are $8-10. Click here for more information and the full schedule.
ART
Poketo presents an “Islands in LA” pop-up art show tonight. Don’t expect to see only finished art. The artists (Luke Ramsey, Travis Millard, Marco Zamora, Derek Albeck, Joel Speasmaker and James Gulliver Hancock) will create works in real time. The open studio begins at 3 pm, and the public’s welcome to come down, grab and drink before the official art show begins at 6 pm, where the art created earlier in the day will be for sale.
BIKE RIDE
Tonight's the night for LA's Critical Mass slow-paced bike ride. Meet at the Wilshire and Western Metro station at 6:30 pm with the bike ride beginning at 7 pm. "There is power in numbers and our objective is a 'show of force' in the streets. We also must take care of each other. The asphalt of Los Angeles can be mean to a bicyclist, we endeavor to change that. Please help us with your cooperation and assistance. This isn't a race, it is a nice, slow, social ride. You are encouraged to talk to other riders while pedaling and wave to pedestrians on the sidewalk and drivers stuck in traffic."
COMEDY
The Society comedy troupe takes to the stage for an improv show tonight at 8 pm at the Repertory East Playhouse in Santa Clarita. Tickets are $12.
