A watermelon is only a watermelon until you depict it in the front lawn of the nation's most power man, who happens to black. "No Easter Egg hunt this year," read the subject line of an e-mail with this photo attached. It was sent by Dean Grose, the mayor of Los Alamitos, a small city of 12,000 people east of Long Beach. "I think he's saying that since there's a black president, there will be no need to hunt for eggs since they're growing watermelons in the front yard this year," said Keyanus Price, an African American who was among those receiving the email, to the OC Register. Grose today said he will resign saying that he "accepts that the e-mail was in poor taste and has affected his ability to lead the city," according to CBS2.

i can't believe the type of ignorance still exist today. i'm glad to hear he's resigning. idiot. :(
Don't be surprised - the conservative faction in this country has become distilled to its essence. The deep ugliness at the heart of the philosphy is simply popping out due to a lack of an effective filter. These people have grown so used to talking only to each other they no longer understand how to effectively speak in code or hide shit from the squares, if you will.
Recall George Allen in 06? His reelection was ruined because he called someone of south Asian descent "macaca". he pretended to have no idea what the word even meant, until it came out that his mom was Algerian French and that "macaca" is the Algerian French equivalent to the n-word.
Expect a lot more of these kind of oops! Slip ups. Hopefully until at least 2010 when we can peel even more offices and seats away from these people.
Good riddance!
Whether there was any intent behind it; it was a stupid thing to do.
The intent was 100% "check out the n***** in the White house." Don't for a moment indulge this liar's claims to have simply been unaware. Anyone who claims to not know that watermelon jokes are racist is a liar and if you should ever meet such a person face to face, you should call them a liar and dare them to prove you wrong.
Just once I wish these assholes would be brave enough to just admit they meant to be racist.
I grew up in Los Alamitos harassed by white kids, some skinheads, and just white people who looked at me funny because I'm yellow. My parents still live there and were surrounded by "yes on 8" signs. So much for progress...
I'm only a few blocks away from there in Long Beach, sandwiched between Hawaiian Gardens and Los Alamitos. I'm not surprised. My neighborhood isn't much better. :(
The yes on 8 signs really made me very angry, as I know my husband and I aren't the only gay couple in the neighborhood. We were the first of two "No on 8" signs in the entire neighborhood. :(
Sending out that email was such a shockingly stupid and insensitive thing to do. Even more infuriating was the fact that when it was exposed that he had the nerve to say that he was unaware of the racial stereotype re: black people and watermelon.
Obviously without an understanding of that stereotype there is no "joke", hence no reason to forward the email. That he actually thought that anyone would buy into his denial is equally insulting. What a dolt... and a jerk... and a liar. Bye bye fucker.
Exactly. The image doesn't make any sense unless you realize it's racist connotation.
Silly cracker.
"Whether there was any intent behind it; it was a stupid thing to do."
The ONLY intent behind it was to make fun of black people. The guy is a disgrace. Thank god the city of Los Alamitos came to its senses.
His apology seemed more sincere than Rupert Murdoch's. This guy may be a racist, but at least he's taking responsibility for the email instead of blaming the recipients for being offended.
Racism is not exclusive to conservatives.
Liberals are just more "nuanced" about it.
It's amazing that any minority persons would want to call themselves a conservative, what with your wonderful tolerance for diversity.
Tonight on the news they were saying that although he is resigning as mayor that he is going to keep his City Council seat.
Apparently his official resignation as mayor will go down on Monday. They said they expect protesters Let's hope so.
Grose indeed.
