"I feel like a 14-year-old playing all the songs I loved and grew up to--now it's a reality," exclaimed drummer Sam Maloney about her new all-girl cover band, The Chelsea Girls. "This is my total dream fantasy band come true."
It was only a few months ago when bassist Corey Parks called up Maloney: "Hey, I have an idea. I want to put together an all girl cover band," she said. Maloney, whose played with Motley Crue, Peaches and Hole, was an instant yes and brought in guitarist Allison Robertson from The Donnas. In turn Robertson called Tuesdae. "She's the most smokin' hot girl you will ever land your eyes one, who by the way, has an amazing opera-classical trained voice."
Now with a band together, a band name (it references an Andy Warhol flick) and a premise--the greatest anthems from the likes of AC/DC, Judas Priest, Blondie and even some Madonna and SOS--it was time to gig. And there was no better time to go public earlier this month on Grammy weekend. So in the spirit of Dave Navarro's Camp Freddy, they brought in special guests including Carmen Electra who is now the unofficial fifth member as the band's emcee.
The show was such a success, Nic Adler at The Roxy asked them to be a monthly fixture on the last Thursday of every month, something Maloney jokingly describes as "that time of the month again."
Tonight when The Chelsea Girls take the stage at 10:30 p.m., Stephen Pearcy from Ratt and Lemmy from Motorhead will join them on stage with The Donnas DJing between sets and Carmen Electra to the side.
"All we want to do is play rock music and for everyone to have a blast--we just want everyone to see us and have a good time" explained Maloney. "Our night is all about having fun and drinking... They're going to have to call the coronor cause we're going to kill it."
There's no beating around the bush for these girls. "We're four hot smoking blondes playing the best songs we never wrote," they say. "We seriously want to be the biggest rock and roll cover band in the world. We're not settling for anything less."
